Hi I’m looking at a 300tdi it’s very clean from what I can see. I’m only getting into it. People keep telling me don’t get one they always go wrong it’s a waste. I jjst want some help as I’m so torn between getting one and just not bothering. I know I will have a laugh with it. I know every car truck whatever they all go wrong at some point. Just wondering like how bad are they ? I probably will go off road but I’m not going to go silly. Just not sure like I’m worried it’s going to cost an absolute fortune.Hope you can give me a good in site to it all ? Happy to listen and hear everyone’s experiences

Welcome to lz better posting in the disco section this is for intros.

Rust, check every where..from the front lights to the rear lights.

Those people that keep telling you "don't get one, they always go wrong" clearly don't know what they are talking about. the Discovery 300tdi is an excellent vehicle if regularly maintained. Many Land Rovers built after the 300tdi started to incorporate more and more electronics which isn't always easily repaired by the home mechanic, consequently some owners were getting big repair bills from garages that didn't really know what they were doing and just kept throwing very expensive parts at problems, unfortunately this still happens and I suspect your friends have heard a horror story from someone's brothers mate down the pub and never actually owned one themselves. I have owned and thoroughly enjoyed my 98 300tdi Disco for nearly eight years now and I've never had any real problems other than wear and tear items, as I said good regular maintenance is the key, parts are plentiful and cheap, most repairs are achievable without having to pay a mechanic and you can go just about anywhere you want as long as your'e not in a hurry. I take mine down to Greece every year so I have to make sure it's kept in good condition as we have to rely on it to get us there and back without any drama which it does every year. I have considered getting a later Disco 4 or Range Rover but I wouldn't be able to maintain one of those myself and although they are fantastic vehicles and far superior in many ways to what I currently have, they are also quite fragile in that there are far more things to go wrong, some of which are pretty complicated and as I wouldn't be able to deal with it myself the repair costs would be out of my league. Don't listen to the miserable old boy down the pub, go and find yourself a decent one that hasn't had too much abuse and isn't too rusty (they all have rust somewhere, some just hide it better than others) and enjoy it.

Hi mate thanks for the reply. Yea I think for one it’s my parents they have never owned one and obviously don’t want me falling into a money pit which is fair enough. A few friends also say about them always breaking down. Personally I think there’s a chance they could break and things snap if you use them for off roading and you are pushing them. But at the end of the day any car could break. It’s how well you look after it. I just wanted some advice of people to see what there views are to help me out. Just want it for a bit of fun every now and again. I won’t be using it for anything mad. Hopefully I should be fine

Also into my cars so it was a toss up between a fast fun car or a landy. I’m thinking I’m still young so got all the time to buy a car that’s a bit of money why not go for something different hopefully a good choice

Look closely under the bonnet at the inner wings, behind the headlights, in at the bulkhead, just all around that area
Depends on the owner but it would be good to have a crosshead screwdriver to lift the carpet edges in the footwells. Same for the boot carpet as rear floors are a big issue, also rear wheel housings.
Sills, inner and outer, also rust.
Replacement panels are easily available and not too expensive but being able to weld would be an advantage. If you open the rear passenger doors, there are almost always rusty arches, people rarely seem to repair them nicely.
If you find one, best to ask an expert for advice.
