hi all, I'm at a crossroads and need some help..
Having bought the Mrs a Freelander and having one myself that is for comp safari use, it's nothing near standard. I now find myself wondering whether to change my luxury tow car..
I've always fancied having something to Greenlane and do some of these off road treks but want something that would tow the Freelander racer as well when I don't want to take the big Van.. (Combined weight car n trailer circa 1800kg) themes has horses and I've been known to tow a big Rice box to take the largest to the vets but never distance we would rent a horse box so it's local towing only with 500kg of horse and weight of box so say around 1300kg?

The question is what would you recommend? It needs to be a daily drive but I'm not afraid to up the mods.. I've been umming and ahhhing about just off road prepping my cayenne as it's surprisingly good off road but it's a thirsty petrol and everything is expensive to modify and repair on it.. So I find myself wondering would another Freelander auto with some good all terrains and a 40mm lift and winch kit on the front fit my bill better or am I better looking disco 2 (just can't help thinking them a bit big) or do I just bite the bullet and accept the loss of my comforts and buy a defender?

D2 as defender would be culture shock after freelanders and Cayenne . D2/3/4 will go more offroad than your cayenne without any mods just a decent set of tyres , will do the towing far better than the Freelander. JMHO

Thanks, guys,
higher than a D2 is out of the question as I don't think ill be any better off, I can get the cayenne further off road than others in the shoot with D3/4's and RR's its only fitted with General AT's but weights 400kg less than the D3 and has a bigger footprint. Plus most of its servicing and operation is complicated with electronics which I want rid of for simplicity.
A concern I have is the width of the disco, we have a lot of narrow lanes around us that the cayenne simply won't fit in, and im conscious of getting into off road situations and getting jammed, if I go disco 2 im planning to fit the ARB full frontal guard with side protection bars running back at wing level into the side bars to protect the bodywork off road, or am I worrying about something that's not that likely to damage easily if rubbing banks and hedges?
The other thing is I have a lot of woodland around me which we collect firewood from, I have a 4'6 x 7' hydraulic tipper that I tow around, until recently I had a quad to go into the woods but its age caught up with it.. so was hoping to tow on the land rover, I find it bit small on the back of the cayenne would I have the same issue do you think?
my final thought train is that with a D2 I could probably sack off the van I have for towing when we go further away and build a box to fit the D2 which can be lifted in and out on the FLift, however this would mean a Full roof rack and a roof tent of sorts, this brings up concern of getting around on a daily basis, does anyone else have experience of running a D2 with full roof rack on? does it cause problems in the real world - car parks etc? what does it do to the fuel consumption - not a massive worry but needs taking into account when utilising the range ability.

Quad, disco 2, roof tent, hydraulic tipping trailer, forklift - stop it now, you're making me jealous!

lol.. unfortunately the quad bit the dust.. age comes to all things :( tipping trailer I built myself quite a while ago for the grand sum of £400 bought a crashed supercarry from the local council parks team for £150 and the steel, hitch and axles, bit of welding and bobs your uncle.. I do love my gadgets generally including Bob my robot lawnmower for laziness!
Roof Tents.. they can't be that uncommon on here surely? at the cost of a major service I thought they would be within the reach (no pun intended) of a lot of guys who use the landy off road? Im really deeply concidering an expedition pod trailer for trekking with aswell but I thought I would keep that on the QT to start with lol...

Robot lawnmower FFS! You are just showing off now lol! Like the super carry idea. Will put that in the back of my mind for a rainy day.
