Hey all..

I Just joined today in the hope that someone can help with my Freelander problem.

I bought my Freelander approximately 2 years ago, really on a whim, i saw it and wanted it but didn't do the research - typical woman eh!

Its a 2000 W reg Petrol (groan) engine, all appeared well with it when i drove it and the actual car is in really good nick.

Little did i know it drank petrol like it was going out of fashion and soon enough it was pretty obvious that when i'd asked the question about fuel consumption the guy at the sales garage had told a big fat porkie!

It was costing me so much to get to work and back that after only 3 months use i ended up buying another car - which actually worked out cheaper than running the Freelander.

So.. i'm left with a Freelander which i'd part financed so was unable to sell, it sat on the drive SORN for 8 months.. in Jan last year my partners car packed in and we decided to dust off the Freelander and put it back on the road, it sailed through its MOT in April 07 no problems and ran fine (apart from the greedy fuel consumption!) for about 2 months, then it broke down - lets say - BIG TIME!

Knowing nothing about Freelanders or in fact Landrovers at all, i was stunned when the garage quoted me £1100 for the repairs - the IRD and Viscos unit has gone. I'm sure this means something to you out there reading this, the guy at the garage told me its a very common thing to go on Freelanders and said that had i known the signs to look for we could have saved a huge bill - oh if only!

Now seriously the guy at the sales garage must have really been having a laff when i drove away that day - in a car that has had approx 5 months of use!

So landy is now sat back on the drive in its old spot SORN again!

The guy at the garage said that he'd be willing to buy it off me as he's a bit of a landrover fan (he had numerous parked around his premises) he'd obvioulsy do the work to get it back on the road.

At first i considered coughing out the money and getting it fixed to sell on, but after looking into things have seen that unlike me, most don't buy on a whim and i'd not be looking at much for a petrol Freelander.

So, my question - how much is this realistically worth? the finance is now paid off and i'm able to sell.

I'm still loathed to sell as its a good looking car and real good fun to drive (what little i did of it!)

did you get the IRD fixed ?

The price will vary depending on the trim level. For instance the entry level model in good condition, private sale, you can expect around £2090. GS model would be worth around £200 more, £2290. The ES model would be worth around £2495. This is assuming you've had the problems fixed of course.
The Freelander is a nice motor but petrol models are so unreliable.

you dont say your location but you could try parking it in innercity housing estate over a weekend then claim insurance and buy a defender

that does represent a problem
mind you could tax it then claim rebate once burnt stolen etc

No not fixed, as stated considered paying out to get it fixed but as i didn't think it would be worth much even if i did this, i decided against it.

The garage man wants to buy it, but i don't want him to take the mick, I thought who better to ask than a forum full of Landrover connoisseurs (thats you guys!) for advice.

I'm not expecting to get loads for it, but would like to think i'm not being ripped off again.

So any idea's apart from getting it nicked and burnt out - which would be amusing as they'd have to tow it away! lol

on a serious note youre in a bit of a catch 22 situation best looking at what the guys offer is,what the cost of repair is and what you would get for it once repaired and do the maths
i,d act sooner rather than later as its depreciating all the time

didnt mean to take p$%s earlier but freelanders bring out my houmorous side especially when im bored at work

take head of prices posted in thread as the guys on here(NOT ME) are generally spot on the money

hope this hasnt put you off landrovers as there great machines if slightly high maintenance
and freelanders are the bad egg(my opinion not fact)

if you're just after selling and need the best price then source your own IRD and VCU, there are usually a few used ones about on fleabay - then if you know a cheap mechanic it should help to get a bit of dosh back. My mates w reg DI has just done the same coming back from france, the VCU had seized and it took the IRD with it - we've now stripped it and have sourced a brand new IRD for £600 + vat cos he's keeping it and wants it right

used IRD's fetch around £300 and used VCU's about £100 plus fitting
