Hi all. I have a problem that I would be grateful for any advice on. I recently fitted 4 new power sockets to my defender, but I've found that when I plug in my mobile or Sat Nav (wife's) and more recently my new Sat Nav. They work on the initial plug in, but when I try to use them again they don't work. Now I found that the device itself is fine but the charger from plug to devices has failed. Can anyone please advise on what is happening, or what the fault is and how I might over come this problem. Cheers.:confused:
 
10a is coming out of the socket???

That'll be your problem, sat nav probably only wants an amp or two... :D


Have you got the negative and positive the right way round?
 
Not sure about the negative and positive, will that affect the amp output? What happens if they are around the wrong way?
 
surely the amps coming out of the socket would be determined by what is drawing on it. (plugged in)
 
I put a USB plug-in thing into one of the plugs and it burnt out....so not sure what's going on. I have plug in map lamp which works fine in all of the sockets.

Yes. Exactly






A Light is not normally fussy on polarity so probably would work. get a multimeter and test it...
 
yer usb thingy is the problem. if it burnt out, it is obviously drawing more current than it needs !!

are yer sockets , lighter sockets?

Ah well.... I think I can see the problem. They say:


Universal Car Cigarette Lighter Socket

Specification:


  • Connector type : Cigarette lighter socket

  • Contact plating : nickel plated
  • Body material : polyamide

The 10 amps might be the issue. Do I need to change them or would a plug in extension sockets at a lower ampage work better?
 
I think you have misunderstood how electricity works.
The current which flows in the circuit will be dependant on the load and the voltage. The load will only draw as much current as it needs, the socket does not push a specified current through something.

You may be better off learning a bit about the basics of electricity before you mess with it again.
 
So for understanding regardless what the ampage is the device will only draw what it needs e.g. 1 amp or what's rated in the tech spec.

I'm not sure then why are the charging leads are blowing or stop working

Possibly because you've reversed polarity or when the plugs going to the socket they are somehow shorting out.

Yes Amps are detemined by the Formula W/V=A or wattage divided by volts - AMperage. so a 100Wbulb divided by 12Volts uses 8.5amps Approx
 
Take it to an auto sparky. Or someone that knows what they are talking about. Yu will set your car on fire.
