I thought I’d do the decent thing and introduce myself - I’ve just bought my third defender, first was a 1994 90 hardtop (my favourite vehicle I’ve ever owned), then a G4 110. I’m now on a 2008 90 Station Wagon, and this time I’m determined to do what I always intend on doing and learn more about self-maintenance - I’m technically minded but never had anyone to show me the ropes. I spent a good hour under the chassis checking for rust and it’s in really good shape for 107k, but shortly after taking delivery I noticed that on cold start there’s a lot of white smoke. I suspect the seller warmed the engine before I arrived, as it only occurs first thing after the engine has been idle all night. I discovered that the EGR cooler was cracked and replaced it, but it’s still blowing a lot of smoke first thing. Next thing is to check the glow plugs but my multimeter has packed in, so ordered a new one. Fingers crossed.
