Hi everyone, thanks for such a great forum. I have had my first Landrover now for about 15 months. Its a 1988 90 TD (19J). I bought it with a new galvanised chassis and nice paint job. My main mistake was to assume that with a new chassis, most of what was bolted back on would be in good nick. Well that was a mistake. I have learned so much in such as short time as I have refurbished / replaced / fettled just about everything to get it up to scratch. My goal is a very original but mechanically strengthened 90. Jobs completed so far. Replacement 2nd hand gearbox, drilled input shaft, repaired centre diff recon steering box, hd steering arms, new steering pump, overhauled swivels, new front hubs, overhauled electric wiring, fixed numerous oil leaks, gaskets, new UJs on props, reconditioned Lucas CAV pump, replaced leaking fuel tank (this was a worse job than the gearbox as the front bracket bolts were galvanised onto the chassis !!)
Whoever did the galvanising work was very poor as there were numerous hours of fun, heating, cutting and otherwise persuading rounded off, rusted or "galvanised on" bolts which should have been replaced when re-bolting the components back on. However, I am now at a stage where the 90 is performing very well and is relatively reliable enough for a 70 mile round trip to work and back every day. I love the old girl as I have many reasons to get the spanners our and fix something else.
