Hi I am Tony from Wombourne near Wolverhampton I recently bought a automatic TD4 suv open, although first registered in November 2003 it is a facelift model. It has a K&N filter chip upgrade, egr blanked off a double din cd/dvd/satnav with reversing camera fitted. It drives superb and I am happy with it, I had a p38 4.6 on lpg before, but wanted to try a freelander, I have recently bought some 17" wheels to replace the 16's so will post up pics when sorted as putting new wheel nuts and 40mm spacers on too. Mot due in sept and changing the low boost fuel pump, luckily I have an independent less than a mile away he seems like a decent guy phoenix 4x4 if you have heard of him. My back windows have been horribly tinted and need doing properly as they do work on the privacy and heat value, light blue in colour its just the right height to slide in an out of and do oil water checks (I am disabled), I only potter around locally in it until the pump is fixed then will open it up on a trip to London to visit my family where I am from originally.
 
Hi, welcome to the forum. Hope your Freelander performs well for you - it should, they're generally solid reliable motors.

If you haven't read up on Freelander's transmission I would suggest you do a little - the whole front end setup is 'conventional FWD' (ie transverse engine, box and diff) but the diff (IRD) has a direct drive through propshafts to the back diff/axle. The prop shafts are split by a Viscous Coupling so that you do not get wind-up and everything is protected. When the front & rear wheels spin at different speeds (over an allowable tollerance) the VCU 'locks up' thus driving all 4 wheels (a bit like the viscous center diff in your old P38). So it is very important to have 4 identical make/model tyres fitted and they are all pumped to the same pressure - if not the tollerance can easily be exceeded resulting in lock-up that blows your transmission. Similarly, read up on the 1 wheel up test to make sure the VCU is operating the correct tollerances - if in doubt replace it - its a lot cheaper/easier than fixing your transmission.

First step though, if you haven't already, is to check under the car to make sure the props are still there! Lots have been converted to 2WD by removing the props.
 
Hi Grumpy thanks for taking time to reply to me, all of the above is duly noted and will action it between now and mot time, last mot no advisories! Getting a quote for a gearbox flush from the local independant, the previous keeper was very meticulous and proud of the vehicle, he actually gave me a big box of parts yellow poly bushes included in it maf sensors and glow plugs, so feel I have a real bargain, last week had the engine terracleaned and was pleasantly surprised by how much better it felt to drive, Normally I wouldn't recommend things of this nature as I am suspicious of frivolous claims of better performance and mpg, but it worked on this engine a treat.
Again thanks for the advice, I will put some pics up shortly one I have all the bits for my wheels arrive.

Do check the 4X4 system as it will give you a huge bill should it fail.
Use decent fuel (nothing from the supermarket pumps). Always use Shell, Texaco or BP so quality is assured.
For reference, Shell V Power will have the same effect as Terraclean, over a longer period of time;)
Use a monthly dose of Comma Diesel Magic to keep the injectors clean.
 
Thanks Nodge for that information there is a Texaco in the village where I live and various BP garages scattered about, personally shell always was my first choice, once the pump is replaced I will scout out a bit further afield, will use my ebay addiction to look out for bits and pieces, I kind of feel I need to finish what the previous owner started, unfortunately as it's just me and the dog, the roof won't be coming off anytime soon, would have been good to fit a soft top in summer and hardtop for winter.
The Terraclean was £100 and they reckon once a year should get it done, although they came out it has to be less hassle just adding stuff to the tank.

A Terraclean does not do the fuel side of the car, forte diesel injector cleaner is good , others may use something else, I am not to far from you in Wolves, I always give my FL1 a good service every year regardless of the mileage I do, I changed the manifold, EGR, twice a year for a clean one as like you I do not do loads of miles, pottering about in a diesel can coke them up quicker than motor way driving, I also give it an Italian tune up once a week, I also have an Hawkeye which is quite useful, so maybe able to help if need be in the future.

Just dump the K&N lol - waste of time and effort.. hope you got the original airbox with it ? :)

Hi Artic and Joe H, thanks for your messages, Artic that's very kind of you to offer and I appreciate it thank you, you can never get enough help in my opinion,
I have used forte products before and agree they are good especially from the tank end forwards. I think they were used in the good garage scheme originally, going back into my memories terrifies me sometimes haha. I will look out for you on my travels!
Joe, yes I have the original box etc and when on the next service I want to dump the filter definitely, It goes well enough for me and does my haul from B&Q and various timber yards, as just moved here so the DIY begins! don't think it ever ends really.
I have friends in Porto Covo they have a horse rescue sanctuary, I have driven there a few times, maybe I will again soon when the freelander has had the proper checks/fluids replaced, I like to be meticulous too with all my vehicles I used to be a transport manager before moving.
Its good to chat with you all and I feel at home already!

Porto Covo is a way down from us near Sines. We are near Oporto (Porto) in the North... the south is crap lol (Too many freeking 'brits' haha)

If you are passing, call in... I have a nice original Piaggio Ape 50 with trailer that you can take home ? :)

Hi Joe omg that looks fantastic, last time I drove to porto Covo took me 27 hours door to door.
My friends were 12km from the sea but was full of tourists when I went down there.
Did you get the Ape 50 in Portugal?

Hi Tony, yes, it is a fully Portuguese car !. registered in 93, all documentation etc. Used to be used by a local herb vendor - they went into the mountains to collect the herbs etc then sold them in the villages. Totally original :)
It would take you a heck of a lot less to drive here - we are a LONG way north of Sines. :) ;)

In the Algarve - the Portuguese hate them with a vengeance - however - they provide an income so they have to find the balance.... they will smile after they have ****ed in your beer lol :rolleyes::)

Hi Joe yes I have my Nif number? I paid my 10 euros and registered there to live but as of yet not got round to it. My friends offered me a plot on their land to build a log cabin/chalet , the only problem there of course I didn't want it hahha oh well onwards and upwards
