Hi All
My name is Steve and I have owned and loved LRs for the past 36 yrs . I have owned many Discoveries from a mark 1 ( 1989) right through to the current discovery 5. I also have owned classic ranger Rovers my first in 1988 , the P38 (1997) through to the current 3 litre Diesel . My better half loves her Freelander which we bought new in 2007.Sadly that car has now become beyond economical repair for us as the auto box finally died at 115000 miles .

We currently have an old Freelander 1 Auto which we use as a general runaround in our fields ( it’s an old workhorse carting horse feed ,hay etc . However we are now thinking of updating this for another Freelander 2 Auto . We want to buy used so the car is likely to have in excess of 100000 miles on it . Not sure if I should start a new thread for this however can anyone offer any advice how many miles a Freelander 2 auto box should last . Although ours failed at 115000 miles is this typical ? Baring in mind our car was 11 yrs old we considered it was reasonable as the car had spent most of its life towing horse trailers . Can anyone offer any advice please ? Thank you

Just get your auto rebuilt, you know the car is solid and when you buy second hand you are buying into the unknown and might end up paying a dearer price than a recon gearbox.

Auto gearbox life is dependent on good luck, how well it was built and what it is used for. If abused badly it will only do 200 miles. If looked after with fluid changes when required then a FL2 auto will go past 150k miles.

What is the problem with yer auto?
