hi everyone i am new here and wanted to pick brains whats your opinions on a Disco TD for towing? will it be better than a petrol range rover? i had the option to fix my range rover p38 4.0l but have decided its going to cost too much and now i am debating as to whether to get a discovery instead ive heard the td versions are pretty good? the range rover towed really nicely. will a 2.5 ltr diesel be just as good? opinions please :) be nice im new and clueless but love land rovers!

You can't compare a petrol with a doozil ... And yer disco should have no probs towing, as long as you know how to tow!
It will not accelerate as fast as yer Rangie, though.

Depends also what you will be mostly towing on, motorways/ country roads etc. What weight? What sort of distance?

A Rangie is a bit more comfortable than a Discovery, which is more comfy than a Defender, but a 110 Defender with a 300TDi engine and heavy duty rear springs would slog along all day pulling a house across a field no bother. If you want to be all comfy and warm and dry towing a caravan for your holidays though, a Defender might be too 'agricultural'.

Hi juley, a disco with a 200tdi or 300tdi will be a good tow vehicle, better than a p38 with a 2.5 diesel and probably better than a V8 petrol. Plenty of low down grunt with a tdi and you can turn the fuel up on the diesel pump for even more power if you want to. Fit a KN type air filter and block off the EGR valve for a bit more grunt. Fit some heavy duty rear springs and shockers and thats about all you need for a great tow motor. Happy motoring.

I bought my discovery 300 tdi for towing horses. It doesn't go anywhere in a hurry towing a loaded trailer, but it will go anywhere! A lot of the show grounds we go to have fields to park in, some have quite steep inclines, but the discovery just chugs along happily as if you're on a flat Tarmac road.

thank you for all your replies! think i will be getting shot of the p38 and getting a nice disco then! it will be for towing two horses. the p38 does it fine and i checked the capacity on the disco and it says that its fine too.

what about the reliability of the discos? how do they compare to the p38? my p38 been nothing but a pain and finally just deciding to dell it as spares or repair! gutted as its just flew through mot but think head gasket has gone and not willing to pour any more money into it. i have heard discos are much more reliable as far as landrovers go. will also be using as a second vehicle so as much as i would love love love a defender think the fuel consumption is a bit steep. thanks for the advice :)

A 300tdi Discovery, or anything for that matter, is a lot more reliable than a P38. You only need to have a look through the P38 section on this forum to see the wide array of issues they can have. With most other Land Rovers it's all more or less the same thing and people have found very good solutions to these issues other than 'burn it'. Obviously with a Land Rover of the sort of age you'd get a TDi, rust is going to be your main enemy. On the other hand getting an older one often means half the stuff has been done to them already!

My 300 tdi Disco returns 30/32 mpg on mixed driving mostly urban.

She will give 25 towing a car on a trailer or 35/40 on steady motorway without trailer so not so bad on fuel

She'll run on bio or cooking oil as well so another bonous:D
