FIGERO

hi everyone, just about to buy my first range rover. 2004 (54) plate 3.0TD6. vogue. metalic black, chrome side steps, cream leather full vogue spec inc rear screens. a real beauty inside and out. however, the bad news is i live if france and to re register here, i need to change the headlights from rhd to lhd. i have just been told it will cost me around 750 euro per side to do this as it is only available as a genuine rover part. B-xenons. if this is correct i cannot proceed with the purchase which is supposed to happed on friday. this was going to be my dream car but i cannot afford the extra dosh. it was suggested to ask if the car had the availability to switch from righthand to lefthand drive lights, as this was the only chance of being able to proceed with the purchase.

any good news out there

AFAIK, I don't see any reason why you can't use 2nd hand LHD lights in that model range rover.

im sure that goes for anything doesent it ? buy new or secondhand. do you think that is the kind of thing that would come on the open market very often. i guess really the question is whether the price paid for the vehicle plus the cost of new lights is still in total a resonable purchase price? the vehicle is AI condition and for sale at 14950. so plus the lights 1500 so a tad under 16k would be the spend. it is from a dealership, so i think the parkers guide for this model with the milage is higher than the dealer is asking anyway, but just seems a lot of money for a set of headlights.

Check with your local breaker's shoul be 30% of new

yes i have seen a lot cheaper as well, but as with most things you get what you pay for i suppose. this vouge is as new condition inside and out. there is not a mark on the paint or on the interior. you wouldent even think it had been sat in.

the wheels are as new and things like that including under the bonnet. i have seen plenty for sale but not one as good as condition as this. i have seem them higher priced than this one but not as good condition.

the parkers guide for this model/ mileage is 2K high than what the dealer is asking so the price seems around the right place for A1 condition. i have been told that dealers gauge a lot of there prices using the parkers guide? so from what i have seen at numerous garage outlets the price seems fair enough to me.

yes plenty around for 9/10/11, but i have to question the condition of some.

at the end of the day, the body colour/interior is what i have been looking for, the spec is what ive been looking for, touch screen nav, full dvd to rear etc, and the overall condition with one prev owner all add to the value i feel.

try ebay for spares or breakers.Wont be "ilegal" till ya register it so give yer a little time to look and find a price ya want.

There are some lhd xenons for an L322 on ebay as I type, £250 a side plus postage.
Thinking laterally there must be some LHD L322`s in this country with the same problem to you in reverse ? Maybe you could contact some of the LHD specialists selling a suitable L322 and ask them if they would swap headlights ? For someone wanting a LHD car to use predominantly in UK then you have just solved their problem and they yours ?
If France is like UK then you don`t have to re-register immediately so you should have some time to use beam deflectors and search out some lhd headlights.

hi ian, yes a idea re contacting the lhd specialists

with regard to the time limet to register, at the best i have one month, obviously in the event of needing to use the car straight away, which i dont so really all i need is to get it back here and it can sit for as long as it takes until i find a reasonable priced set. i will take a look on ebay and try find the ones you have seen. do you recall where you saw them? perhaps i will now proceed with the sale now that i know they are around for reasonable money.

thanks for the help to everyone

ps does anyone think 112K for a 6 year old vogue is reasonable or high? it has the BMW 3.0TD6 fitted

If you search L322 headlights in vehicle parts and accessories they should come up on ebay - looks like the same guy selling a rhd set and a LHD set but as individual lights.
I`d also try some of the larger independent LR/RR specialists and a couple of main dealers since its a fair bet that many LHD L322 owners will have taken them there to make their lights UK compliant.
112K looks a bit toppy but not outrageously so and if you don`t do many miles yourself it will eventually average out, from your description it sounds like a nice car, and if you are happy with it that is the main thing, not whether it conforms to some sort of ideal.

hi ian again i have looked at the ebay site and the headlamps you sugggested are halogen and not xenons. it seems that these cannot replace the xenons.

i found another site that has them listed for lhd and they are around 500 plus vat per side. i thought merceedes were expensive but that is crazy prices. back to the drawing board

The French MOT types won't have it...my brother-in-law moved to France 2yrs ago with a camper van thing.

Major job: convert lights to LHD, get receipt for lights to French spec, get reciept for fitting said lights to French specs by authorised French garage,

Same with exhaust cos it was on the wrong side, etc. then you got to register it.

Then it's got to pass a test for vehicle type, then the French MOT thing.

It's just money after money, your better off buying one over there.

Apologies, I didn`t read the advert closely enough - but on ebay.com (the US version) there look to be a number of LHD xenons available from US sellers that might be worth a look.

When I took my 1991 Discovery to France I had no trouble at all. After fitting LHD headlamps myself I took the vehicle for a French MOT, which it passed with no trouble. The tester just made sure the lights are correctly aligned, as he would any car. After that registering it in France was just a simple matter of getting the paperwork right. I suggest you are careful about buying a vehicule in France as second hand Land Rovers seem to be very expensive. I saved a great deal taking my own over compared with selling it in the UK and buying another in France.

hi guys, dont know if this post is still being looked at, but in the end i did not need to change the headlights at all. i adjusted them according to the handbook, and it passed the french mot and now have the certificate.

i am just waiting to get it registered in france and will have it all completed next week.

so thanks for all the advice

regards
