Hi ALL


I Recently bought a 110 high cap pick up with the td5 engine 2003 134000 miles

it is really clean,and engine seems to run sweet , i have no hot air coming from heater.

i sent it to garage today they seem to think its head gasket,I'm not so sure not that I'm an expert.
coolant seems fine , thermostat changed,still no heat no obvious signs of oil leaking from the head gasket, no smoke from exhaust .no cream on oil ,oil looks fine.

sometimes the temp gauge goes high then immediately back to normal running temperature , yesterday it went to below blue ,turned off engine then back on and went straight back to normal operating temperature.

any help much appreciated, and any good landy mechanics in northampton area? .

the garage have had it but to be honest ,everything seems like there doing me a favour and a lazy cant do attitude. i think water is reaching the matrix, fan is working , where would i find
the resistor?

There was hydrocarbons in the header tank
 
personally, I can't see it being the head gasket but it might be worth getting a second opinion.

it is worth checking the above though, i.e. check the 2 pipes going into the heater matrix to see if they are hot. if they aren't chances are you have a water flow problem
 
If pipes are hot then it might be either the blower or the matrix. Can't see why it would be the CH
 
No mate, I cant see the heater not working with a HG failure, unless there was no coolant. Has any of the cables to the heater box come loose? Have a google about adjusting the cables to the heater box, loads of info on how to set them up, that's where I would start.
But you do have other more important issues!
 
Unless the HG failure is causing air locks, but I have never had one do that before.
 
And check the control cables haven't broken or slipped out. They tend to sieze up if not lubricated regularly
 
No heat from the hater is frequently a sign of a failed head gasket, BUT that is usually because the coolant has been lost and no water is getting to it. Hydrocarbons in the header tank is not a good sign though.
If heat is getting to the matrix I would check the operation of the flaps in the heater. I'm not sure if a TD5 heater is the same as earlier ones, but on those the heat is increased and decreased by a flap operated by a cable on the top of the heater box in the engine bay.

Same kind of set up with the heater box as far as I know as the earlier ones, lots of TD5 heater boxes on EBay and the TD5 bulkheads take earlier heater boxes..
 
Thank you guys! all cables seem to be fine, matrix is not blocked and i have flushed it through.fan is working . I guess it could be the gasket , not good ! only had the motor less than two weeks. i will just give it to my nearest trusted landy mechanic and get them to sort it as i cant be doing with the headache. thank you all for all your help i really appreciate it!
 
If the pipes are hot, vents are open and the fan is working I can't see why there is no heat
 
Have you moved the heater valve operating lever on top of the heater box by hand to hot position, move it back and forward to ensure it is working ok, operating cable may be broken or slipping.
Also bleed the cooling system and when filling do so very slowly bit at a time.
 
For what it’s worth, if the HG was blowing you’d still get a degree of warm air, not much, but some. If it had failed completely then you would expect to see other telltale signs.

I would first bleed the whole coolant system then systematically make your way around eliminating each part of the coolant system. From the picture you’re painting, I tend to feel the issue is with the matrix. Is there any signs of water around the heater matrix area or water pump? Are you losing any coolant?

On a side note, check behind the dash binnacle and ensure the cable is secured.

That could well be to do with air in the coolant system, try filling it with the plug on top of the rad removed.
And when you are sure it is full of water, if still no heater, check the foam inside the heater box, see if it has degraded and blocking airflow.
