Hello

I want to upgrade the headlights in my defender 90. Whats the best ones to get please?
You can either fit halogen bulbs if you are not already using them, or fit spotlights to come on with main beam. What you cannot legally do is fit HID bulbs. To legally use HID's, you need auto leveling headlights and headlight wash/wipe.

No u dont its a myth

WLM is right, although its EU regs to have leveling and washers there is no way to tell if it was converted before these regs therefore it only applies to new vehicles from 2012...

what you got WLM one of them (what looks to me like) overpriced "kits" or HID bulbs?

I chucked some 100w bulbs off of ebay in mine and its made a HOOOOGE difference, worth a try for a fiver

yu risk melting the wires, the switches and potentially setting the motor on fire :(

Disco headlight connectors are prone to melting at 55W (9Amps). how do yu think the wiring will cope (and the stalks) with 100W (17Amps)?

No it is not a myth. All headlamps used on a vehicle must be either type approved, or comply with both ECE Regulation 98, which refers to the bulb, lens and reflector; and ECE Regulation 48 which concerns the actual fitting of HID kits. HID kits are not type approved for Defenders, therefore an entire kit that conforms to, and is marked ECE 98 compliant must be fitted. The fitting of the headlights must conform to ECE 48, and ECE 48 states that in order to be compliant, cars fitted with HID headlights must also be fitted with self leveling headlight mechanism, either via self leveling suspension, or the headlight unit itself, and it must also have a headlight washer system. It does not matter when the headlights were fitted, as vehicles of all ages must comply with ECE regulations at all times when on the road.

As per my previous post the action implemented by DfT and vosa was that vehicles from 2012 onwards only would be subject to these rules, this is to allow for the thousands of conversions already carried out according to the law at the time. This was told to me and my 3 testers during the seminars earlier in the year held by VOSA. You can search the net all you want but this is how the rules have been interpreted by the officiating bodies and this is how vehicles are being tested, you can't just outlaw a common and legal conversion due to EU regulations that we don't even want (again a voiced by DfT and VOSA)

Are you saying that VOSA are now saying that HIDS don't have to be 'E' marked, be self levelling nor have washers on a pre 2012 vehicle?:confused::confused:

Then whoever told you this is either misleading you or has been misinformed. All vehicles irrespective of age MUST conform with UNECE regulations when used on the road. DfT and VOSA do not have the authority to supercede these regulations. Any HID kits that do not conform to both ECE Regulation 48 and 98 are techincally illegal. If you follow the links in my previous post it says that.
