Series 3 Diesel....

Every now and then my headlights pack up, will work fine for weeks, then all of a sudden nothing, no lights, but main beam light on dash stays on, no matter what I do with the stalk. Leave it for a while and re try, lights might work...

Side lights dont seem to be affected.##Tonight they packed up again, so I had to cadge a lift home...

Has any one had this prob? If so what is the fix, my guess it would be a bad earth somewhere, or a relay.

Any help and advice would be very welcome...

Am going to wire in spots at the weekend, so that I will have lights, but its not the cure I know...

Dont think its the stalk, cant be 100% though....

Relay, where is it located??

My guess is a bad earth, trouble is the bloody things wont pack up when I'm looking at the thing, and when they dont work, nothing gets em back, bloody annoying.....

Cruddy contacts?
Heat expansion problem on the switch?
intermittent wiring?

I would think about running a second wire and putting a switch on that, so if they go out you have a backup system.
Just until you find out what's wrong.

Mine did that a few years ago and when i looked at the bowls they were totally corroded and just hanging off.. i replaced them with britpart plastic ones, wired them up with the original wiring and they worked fine !

Bowls look new, when it stops raining I wil go and have a damm good look at em.

Should all the lights be wired through the ignition on a series 3?

Check the Earths behind the front Grill - there should be a connection behind there for it.
Mine corroded, so I did a Halogen conversion on them - Mixed from Ebay. - Ring Light set- blokie No.1, 2nd hand Bowls from Blokie No.2, Seals from a mini (Blokie No.3) Black Rims from a wolf with screws (blokie No. 4) New looms from VehicleWiringProducts. No probs now.

- Landrover 95% recycled !

Im new to this forum but I had bother with a series IIA. If you install an earth wire between each light and finally to the chassis earth then you dont rely on the bodywork to bond.

had this with my s III cable from light switch (dipped beam) had a break in it and would work sometimes, then packed completely on its mot light test, i just replaced wire from switch to bulb works great.

hope this helps

cant remember for sure, (series 3), but isnt there a big block connector twixt the bulkhead and engine compartment for most of the wiring?
seem to remember that they can give problems, like corroded contacts etc...

thats another options for a discovery series III, i have got land rover series three the older one. my advice if you have disco try messaging clutchdust he very knowledgable about these things. but yeah there is connector block there and it does corrode and stuff its worth checking. two pieces of wire one black one red with crocodile clips on both ends. connect earth wire from part being tested to earth on battery, try the switch if no joy keep it on to ensure good earth, then try live wire from part being tested to the live feed for it i.e back of switch if that lights anything up its, good to that point so then move toward the next juncture ( word of the day juncture) or intersection of wires to continue test when it ceases working thats where problem is.

hope this helps

Cheers guys, am going to change the engine and poss the gear box soon, so will do a wire check etc then when acces is easy.....

Will report in due course
