Hi,not been on for a while.

We have just bought a second hand landrover freelander 2ltr V6 and need advised regarding the header tank.

My hubby just drove it for 20 minutes and when switched off and parked up the header tank was bubbling and filling up, slight hot smell coming from the car.

Any suggestions what it could be?

Any abnormal readings off emperature gauge? Have you been towing anything with it after its been bubbling, or is it doing it after just a short journey? Hav you checked the coolant level when its cold? Check inside your oil filler cap for whiteish gunge deposits..
 
Hi, temperature gauge is fine- steady in the middle, no gunge in the oil.
The fans do not seem to be kicking in and the engine management light is on

We only noticed the bubbling after the journey we made- about 20 mins driving,it was when we switched it off we
noticed it.

Is the engine in limp home mode? IE is it driving normally with the light on, or is it more groggy than usual?
 
Seems ok, not groggy, noticed the bottom radiator hose is cold, any ideas why?

is there a way of testing when the fans should kick in?

Wendy, as youve just bought it i think maybe you should start with a total system flush, and fill up with new coolant fluid.. If after this your expansion tank starts bubling again, at least youll know how long it took to lose the fluid youve just put in..

Keep an eye for any fluids leaking out onto your driveway. Also, check expansion tank top for what look like hairline cracks.. They feel fine, but under high pressure the cracks can let steam escape, which could be where youre fluid is going.. New tank kits are on ebay for £27. Could just be the tank expansion cap (again ebay £3).. If its none of these, then it could be the dreaded HG failiure.. So best get to a garage and have a sniff test done.. No white gunk doesnt necassarily mean your HG is ok.

Were not losing fluid through the header tank, when the engine is turned off it bubbles up as if the system is pressured (could it be the thermostate?) the bottom radiator hose is cold but the top etc is hot, heater in car blowing hot as should do.

hi my 1.8 fl was doing the same hat to say it was the head gasket:doh:
 
Hi, my hubby fitted a new expansion cap and all seems well at the moment, gonna take it for a run and fingers crossed:)
 
Could be the thermostat is US if bottom hose is cold,
the heater will work as the hot water is going through the by-pass hose instead of the stat.
