Hi
Iam about to change the head gasket on my 1.8 freelander. A couple of questions please.
Ive seen a number of gasket kits (with head bolts) for sale ie ebay. Are the quality up to much or is it best to buy from a landrover dealer?
Do I have to skim the head if i cant see any visible damage?
Ive been quoted £500 at a garage but the cars only worth a grand, so thought I may have a go myself, is it a couple of days job? Wish me luck.

If you use the search button you'll find your answer numerous times ... although it is obviously a very rare fault :doh:

You could have posted the correct answer five times in the time it took to post that. Whats the point of replying? :confused:

You want the Multilayered one if you can get it, with a head saver shim. I wouldnt buy cheap with these, think a good kit is about £100 with bolts etc.

Bargain:
GENUINE ROVER MG MGF 1.8 + VVC TF HEAD GASKET SET | eBay

Buy bolts too.
 
this seems more comprehensive:

LAND ROVER FREELANDER 1.8 K-SERIES HEAD GASKET SET | eBay

whichever gasket set you buy, make sure it includes the words "multilayer" as these are the later version, also look for "metal dowels"

you may also want to consider the modified oil rail, and there is also a remote thermostat modification which can be made as well.

I am a little busy right now with stuff, but they are both well covered on this forum, just type either of the terms above into the search bit. Make sure you use the search function between new posts and quick linksas that only searches the forum, not the whole internet like the google one above.

ah bollix, never noticed that till you pointed it out. Don't buy the ****part one !

Also, when I went back through them, a couple of them contained this in the text:

"ALSO AVAILABLE MODIFIED HEAD GASKET (MULTI LAYERED STEEL WITH SAVER SHIM) - PLEASE SEE OUR OTHER AUCTIONS"

which implies the one they are offering is not multi layered, make sure you get the multi layered one.

Is that right clever boy ... I think not as it took me about 8 seconds to type it. The point is this: That question has been covered so many times by so many people that the answer can be found quicker than it takes to type the question yet again and then wait for answers that are already there!! Take a chill pill ... you obviously have trouble with the curling tongues!

No im just suprised as this is the first forum ive been on in a loong time thats got such a massive contingent of 'use search' posters. They are neither useful nor helpful. I just add them to the ignore list :D

So do you think the answers will be different if you ask an often asked question yet again :confused:
I, for one, would much rather find an answer to a question immediately rather than wait for people to answer over the course of a couple of days ... Each to their own though! :p
