Hi all,

Another problem discovered today with my P38... and perhaps we are at fault this time :frown:.

Filled up the water before our 1000km drive home and absentmindedly didn't check it again in the last week while driving around town. Today there was a hissing, followed by steam coming through the vents inside and then temp went to hot (matter of seconds). Promptly stopped engine. Once it cooled down we filled it with water again and went to the land rover service. Mechanic filled it up some more (water kept pouring out) and started the engine and said that there were bubbles so we have damaged the head gasket (would take 2 months to get parts and repair so best drive to Istanbul to a service there). Same mechanic said the leak on passenger side was from brakes (?).

Spoke on phone to highly recommended Land Rover mechanic (unfortunately 14 hrs drive away in Istanbul) and he said not to panic yet and the leak on passenger side was due to heater not radiator. And that if we went to him he would use a camera to see inside engine before taking it apart.

Is the bubble test accurate? What is the best way to conduct it? Could this overheating have caused a serious problem?

Other notes - appears to be oil around the engine. Running on petrol/LPG, can smell both petrol and LPG fumes, engine a bit shuddery, can hear a bang when accelerating at times.

We have very limited funds and just trying to decide whether to go to Istanbul to get it looked at by a proper mechanic or try and sell it a lot cheaper with faults noted...

Any help much appreciated. Not at all very good with cars, but helps to have something armed with when seeing the mechanics so I don't get taken for a fool.

Compression test and a Hydro-Carbon Sniff (Block) test should be done before pulling the heads

you'd probably get gaskets ordered and delivered from the UK in less time, plenty of places like island 4x4 or John Craddock ship around the globe.

if there is water in the passenger footwell then heater matrix O rings if the car is left hand drive.
could be air trapped in the system forcing the water out of the overflow,

dont think he could get a camera in the engine to see what's wrong.
Limited funds and a Range Rover in Turkey does not go well together

does sound like heater matrix/O rings you can easily by pass this by dissconnecting the 2 heater hoses in the engine bay and connect then together using a bit of 22mm copper pipe refill bleed and test

good luck
