Fine but when head gaskets go there may be other damage as well, particularly but not exclusively if the car has been driven for some time with a dodgy headgasket, so a compression test on engine cylinders is sually done to diagnose whether there is anything else to worry about.
As an example I have a Saab 900 Classic convertible which does very few miles - the head gasket went five miles from home, I drove it home very carefully without the car overheating and had the engine compression tested, one cylinder wall was still thinned and I ended up having it sleeved whilst the head was off for the gasket to be done.
If your mechanic says its just the headgasket then fine, maybe he has compression tested it already, but probably best to check.

Mine went on my 200tdi 2 weeks back, smoke overheating etc. Buy a full head gasket set (bout £20). Check all the air hoses and cooling hoses if they are filled with oil and water combo. Clean them all out if you can. But if you do dont start it up or it will all happen again. Appart from the gasket set, I would buy a new air filter (if all clogged up) and oil filters. Even if the air filter is not clogged, make sure you change the oil filter. And an oil change ofc
