My 300 TDI has around 150k miles and a few months ago I noticed some pressure in the crankcase not enough to blow out the dipstick but it definitely blows out of the filler cap along with smoke/oil mist. I changed the filter for the breather and removed the pipes and blew through them to check for blockages. After this I assumed either a problem with valves or piston rings but recently I noticed I am losing coolant about 1 pint per fortnight there are no coolant leaks and no sign of coolant in the oil however once I noticed steam from my exhaust so im assuming head gasket, the whole block is bathed in oil. Would a head gasket cause combustion gasses to enter the crankcase? Apreciate any replies

I was loosing a slight amount of water and there were no obvious cause so I did the head gasket and that fixed it. However I wasn't having pressure issues.

It's worth doing anyway, when you take the head off you can see the state of the bores and then decide if a rebuild is needed.

Probably do it in thw next month or so, hope it doesnt need a rebuild need the bloody car for work during the week

Well hopefully the water will be fixed possibly my engine will stop covering itself in oil too but who knows its landrover

Mot is out in November so the hg is being put off untill some welding and chassis painting is done... would valve stem oil seals cause pressure in the crankcase without causing it to burn oil? might aswel do them and a leakdown test once the heads off

No buddy, smokey mornings yes but not crankcase pressure, but if taking head off I would do them anyway,

I've just done my head gasget on an engine which, according to the reciepts i got with it, has done just over 150000 km, the engine had got hot due to a heater hose split, you can still see the honing marks in the bores, so 150000 miles is not that much more. I bought the RR as a non runner but it runs like a clock (without the ticking) now, no crank pressure at all. Cheapest option is a £27 or so gasget set & do the head. Just follow the head tightening sequence to the letter,.
