Hi peoples,

I am considering changing the head gasket on my 200tdi myself - i am fairly handy with most mechanical tasks on my disco, but wondering if that is enough for me to carry out the head gasket replacement myself?

144k on the clock and starting to run a little tired now - engine bay is getting oily now, starting to smell oil coming through the heater when on and a little more smoke coming out of the exhaust. I fancied changing the head gasket as a pre caution.

Any tips or advise from anyone would be appreciated.

Sounds to me like you may have a tired engine, to establish how tired remove the oil filler cap and rev the engine, if you get lots of gassing evident then it's due to the combustion gas blowing past the piston rings, if this is the case all the head gaskets in the world aint going to sort the problem.

144k, Its still a youngster :D, Do a search on head gaskets for 200tdi there will be plenty of info. Trust me :D

Did a search before i created this thread - didnt really throw up anything meaningful or not like the symptoms that i am experiencing. So hoping that the helpful people amongst the discovery community would be able to help me diagnose the issue.
 
Can you see where the oil is leaking from ?

Check the rocker cover gasket, clean the breather hoses, change the fuel filter (All easy to do).
If you think the engine is on it's last legs have a compression test done

My wife has got a Tdi 200 with 161k miles on the clock and still as fit as a butchers dog.

Before you go for the head gasket change, considor changing the rocker cover gasket (oil leak around the engine), the 'o' ring (ditto) on the rocker breather (black cylindrical thing with two pipes attached) and most importantly what state is you air filter in? They're so cheap to buy (full 3 filter set at Paddocks about £11) just put a new one in as an experiment and see how she feels.

What's her service history like? When was the last time her gear/tranny/axles oils changed? I mention this as I've just done this on the wifes car and made a noticeable difference to how she runs.

Just a few suggestions you understand - not telling you what to do :)
 
If you do decide it is the head gasket, I did mine and fund it an ok job, just folow something like the Haynes for guidance. Very pleasing on completion when you have done such a job and she runs again!
 
I have had the disco for 16 months and i have serviced it twice (oil/fuel/air filters) and changed engine oil. I have only replaced gearbox/transfer/diff oil once in this time.

If you are standing at the front of the disco the leak seems to be coming from the back left hand side of the engine.

I have had rocker cover off to reset valve clearancies. So i may change this anyway.

Together with this i have the dreaded wheel wobble/vibration. I have new steering damper and poly bush kit which i am hoping will cure it.

Now i need to put aside a few days to do it!
