So it is looking more and more likely that the head has to come off again as all the replies are saying valve trouble. Having only had the heads off last weekend my question is as the head bolts are new and only been on a week do they need replacing as per manual.
The vehicle is a 1998 p38 range rover 4.0 petrol.

Are they stretch bolts. If so yes. I know the Disco 300 tdi bolts can be reused up to 5 times but they are not.I've just done the head on one.

I wouldnt risk re-using. For the price of a new set you dont want to be pulling the heads again.

If you tightened them right they are stretched beyond the point where they will return to original size. Buy some new.
PS I really feel for ya heads off again. When I did my heads( and cam) I spun a big end and knacked the crank. Took me 18 mth before I could face having the engine out! What slowed me down on the engine out is putting stuff back then finding another item won't fit so going back ad infinitum. Seemed like I did everything twice! Even bolting the block to the bellhousing cos the torque converter was not right!
It'll be quicker than you think especially if it's
the driver's side head.
