Hi, Im new to the forum and have just purchased a 2003 td5 GS discovey 90,000 miles on the clock for £5000, fsh and so on. I absolutley love the motor but have being getting loads of warning and disoproval from some friends and family as they see it to be an unreliable deisel guzzler,

Bascially I wanted your views and any hints or tips on keeping mine running smooth and wether or not Ive bought a crock a crap

cheers

Get new friends and slaughter your family...fk it, got a disco now, who needs the tree hugging, veggy lesbian do-gooders!

welcome
please search as there seems to be a plethera of people debating the reliability of td5's in the past few days

If you love it and can afford it nothing or no one else matters. ( it will reduce you to tears at some point , but hey what the ****. enjoy it )

Its a pile of ****, you shud get rid of it strate away.... the 200tdi disco is by far the most reliable and fun to drive...as it happends ive got 1 that id be prepared to swap for your unreliable piece of scrap its got a few battle scars but it is getting on a bit.. let me know :D

:5biagree: as can be said for any motor ... thing is, it's best to be proactive with the servicing on any LR ..slack off on the servicing and you'll eventually regret it......

There are numerous threads on here detailing the commonest problems with the TD5, you just need to search for them;)

They are superb, I'm on my third one and they only break down on days that end in Y.
You will be fine, remember any of your friends who slag it off WALKS

Your mates and family are wrong. 2003 onwards TD5's are the best there are.:)

Make sure you keep a list of those that slag it off. Then you know who to tell to feck off when they want you to shift their furniture, tow their car, get a lift in the snow etc.;):p

As ratty says wait for the snow and see how many freinds youve got then when there stuck or just have to be somewhere but there car wont get of there drive, i had a simular reaction from someone i know (not a friend and probably never will be now) when i bought my disco 1. got a call from him can i help just bought a mondeo but it needs trailering home about 80 miles away, what, i said, in my most unreliable vehicle ever built fuel guzling 4x4 rust bucket piece of crap............**** orf and no u cant borrow my trailer either u cock cos your car wont tow it anyway. (i dont think low to mid 30's mpg is bad for a 2 tonne truck.)

Well I'm happy-ish with the fuel consumption on my TD5 35ish a gallon that's more than my Transit van ( 99 model ) And about the Same as my Harley Softail ..If you have the slightest concern about fuel go and buy a small car..

You may well get 35 mpg on a long run but to be realistic low 20,s town driving. Now youve got a Landy you will what to take it off road to see what it can do. Go on get it muddy , you know you want to ! :D

Sounds a reasonable buy if its has good history, and bodywork is ok it.I have a 2002 which I have owned for two years and has 66,000 and no trouble except of course the sunroofs leak. I have done 17,000 and only tyres, all four, regular services on the dot.
I still look forward to driving her every day, now you could not say that about most vehicles on the road which are designed by a computer, built by a robot, driven by a moron.

cheers for all the comments, the drive is fantastic and the other day I had one of the non belivers ask me for a tow as they were stuck needless to say I showed them how good my french was. mpg is good so far but to be honest Im not really concerned as I was and the only small issue im having at the mo is getting to the fog light covers to wipe off condensation

I agree.

But I add this ... anyone who slags off my TD5 Disco can make other arrangements when they need towed out of ditches or snowdrifts.
