Hi everyone, just bought an 02 freelander TD4ES, noticed this site and began to panic, with everyone telling each other horror stories about Freelanders, surley its not that bad a motor is it (please tell me not), only I don't tend to notice similar sites for Ford or Citroen, have I just chosen wrongly, I've had no probs so far but am getting a bit paranoid seeing this site !!, is their anything I need to look or listen out for ?

You've bought a great car, I have 2 friends who regularly offroad their freelanders, up there with the best off the 4x4's. Any Landrover vehicle is not a usual form of transport,more maintenance and awareness are required from the driver, because you got alot of technology for your money.
My advice:stop thinking about the potential faults and just enjoy driving this vehicle. This is, as you have mentioned, a bigger forum than most manufacturers, because there are more clued up hands on enthusiasts with a large range off tips and facts- new friends to help you.
I know how it feels to read the faults, but stuff it!

Just to relief your mind of all wrong ideas I'll let you know I bought a new 2001 Td4 Steptronic SE 5drs. (have it since january 9th 2001), in october 2001 I had it chiptuned and have done about 45.000kms so far. Every day I drive the car both my wife and I are glad we decided to buy the Hippo (Freelander) and not somethign else. It was, for us, since day '1' a dream to drive and every single day we drive it (the wife always as passenger) we like it more and more. Our previous car was a Mercedes 190E (petrol engine 2.0L and done over 200.000 kms with it) which is not the least of cars to compare the Hippo with but in fun and comfort to drive it is much better, for us, than the Mercedes. When, with the Mercedes, we did a trip of about 100 kms my wife already suffered of backache and now with the Freelander we can do 600 kms daytrips and she comes out with no pain at all. I always said I hoped to have the Freelander as reliable as the Mercedes but after a couple of problems (all taken care of under warranty, namely a MAFsensor, a radiator and a fuelpump) it looks as things are stable now. So don't worry about the Td4 and enjoy every minute you drive it, and if a problem comes up, don't think other cars never fail. (As a matter of fact I had to replace the dead battery last month, it lasted almost 5 years, so what ??) Have fun and take care.

Remember nobody will post up how reliable and trouble free there car has been, they will only post the problems, as the Freelander outsells the majority of similair sized 4x4's x far, it is bound to show up some well known issues.
I bought my wife an 02 TD4 GS 5 door, 6 months ago and she loves it, with some choice mods it looks good and drives great.
Hers has 30k on it with 1 owner from new before us and i contacted the previous owner and he confirmed it was faultless and he sold it for a Mazda RX8 which he regrets in a big way partly due to the 16MPG he gets from the Mazda, LOL.
Enjoy your car but remember if in doubt with anything to do with it, ask here before you go anywhere near a LR dealer.

Thanks for all the replies, its really put my mind at rest, have to agree its the best thing I've ever driven, in style, comfort and even the fuel consumption is better than I'd thought, I'll be sure to look right here for any advise I might need, here's one already (only very minor) I've noticed the remote is'nt working as well as it was, side and rear doors open very slowly when using the remote, I've changed the battery (in the remote) but there seems no change, is there anything else I should do ?

I have the driver's door lock acting like this, when I close all doors with the remote and push once for the driver's door to open, I see the knob coming out very slowly, sometimes it even happens I have to push twice (to open all remaining doors) in order to have the driver's door opened. Earlier this week I sprayed some WD40 into the top opening but so far I can't say it made a difference. But I never think about it until someone else mentions it. One of the previliges of LR I guess. Probably something not working fluently inside the door but never seen a door at the inside, so don't know what it is. (It might be enough to put some grease here or there to have it work picobello, but ....) Good luck and glad you seem to be a little reliefed after all, and also glad you agree it's the best thing you can think of to drive. Ciao.
