Hi Folks, been lurking for a while and unfortunately I've been prompted to post following a fairly catastrophic morning with my F reg 2.5td. I wondered if anyone may be able to shed light on the following series of events and venture to suggest what my next move might be...

I'd driven about 20 miles when the engine began turning over as if full throttle causing a huge amount of smoke - some smoke came into the cab on the passenger side.

This continued after I removed the ignition key - in fairly disconcerting fashion.

After a couple of minutes of mega revs and smoke it dropped a load of water onto the road, presumably from the radiator, followed by a loud bang and then......silence.

Any insights would be most welcome.

Thanks

jim

your engines blown up !

sounds like it ran away on its own oil .....

correct protocol would be bang it in 5th , drop the clutch and jump on the brakes !

bet it was impressive to watch though :(

This is quite a common cause of death for the old 2.5TD engine. :(
It happens when the engine actually starts to draw in and run on its own oil, so, turning the key off and cutting the diesel will do nothing. The engine will run at super high revs until it either self destructs or runs out of oil and seizes up.

This is a Tdi doing exactly that;

I suggest you take a look at this thread;

It'll probably come in very useful ;)

Thanks for the replies folks.

My first Landy and I've only had the bugger 3 weeks.

Could be worse I suppose.

- only been at it a few months my self - far better than driving a eurobox - been so dissapointing getting back in my pug van while fixing the landy.
