HANDBRAKE SHOES RENEWAL.
Here’s how Ah did it….
First ah jacked up one wheel, stuck an axle stand under the axle and chocked the other wheels…
then usin’ a 9/16 panner ah removed the nuts around the prop and then sat the prop out of the way. (The reason ah jacked up the wheel was because it let me turn the prop to get at all the nuts.)
Next ah slackened the handbrake cable and then the adjuster on the back of the brake (might’ve been a bit easier doin’ it from the top if ah had normal seats in!)….
then ah removed the two screws holdin’ the drum on and then removed the drum…
to see this….
ah took a note of which way the shoes were fitted…
and removed them….
then ah gave the drum and back plate a clean and the two bottom piston things fell out of the adjusters!...
Next ah swapped the springs from the old shoes to the new ones (should’ve really got new springs!)…
Ah stuck some bits of wire in the springs to stop them fallin’ out when pickin’ them up and refittin’…
just a photie of the part number…
Next ah cleaned and stuck a wee bit of grease on the adjuster pistons and held them in with a piece of fishin’ line. The pistons on the left adjuster have a slope, when stickin’ them back in make sure the highest part of the slope faces outward. The pistons on the other adjuster (right hand side) have a groove on the end that has a slope, make sure the highest part of the slope faces towards the back plate… and becareful ye don’t loose the roller thingy that sits in the groove……
Then it’s just a case of stickin’ a small smear of grease on the ends of the shoes and fittin’ them….
removin’ the fishin’ line, stickin’ the drum back on….
stickin’ in the two screws that hold the drum on…
tighten up the handbrake cable a wee bit, give the handbrake lever a good pull to centre the shoes, the drum should turn freely after the handbrake is released, then adjust handbrake to suit…
Once the adjustments were made, it was just a case of stickin’ the prop back on and bolting it up…
That’s it, job done.
