I dont have the direct link to hand but Ashcroft certainly mention removing the half shafts oil seal if you're fitting flanges with screw on caps.

I assume someone here has done just that?

Any feedback on the results?

The reason I ask is that I went to replace the half shafts today and one of the oil seals is clearly stuffed (wear marks on the old half shaft so I reckon its somehow chewed up).

I was going to order a new one and then I remembered reading about removing them and thought "I could do that..."

...maybe.

try a bit of googling, as I am sure people have done it before to make their wheel bearings last longer on the pre-TD5 models.

I have had a bit of a go. Plenty of mentions but not a lot of (or any, but I'm sure someone will now search better than me and make me look a fool!) of people actually saying "I run like this and it's fine"

Ok then "I run like this" 1990 truck owned thirty one years. 185k
Standard flanges, have not had to replace any. Never replaced a wheel bearing. Oil migrates to flange/hub keeps them well lubed. Like the series the pre defender models are designed like this.
Down side, seals gaskets on/in hub have to be good. Replacements for those pesky plastic end caps are rubbish.
On mine have switched to series metal caps with a bead of silicon to keep the oil in.
If working on a hub, say seal renewal I do grease bearings, this is so they have lube until oil gets there from the diff. Keep diff topped up and hubs/flanges/shaft splines are well lubed.
