Before I get roasted, I have searched for threads on this, and I've read through the relevant ones.

I'm after doing a bit more of this greenlaning. It's fecking great fun.
However I'd rather spend out now, than be caught out with repair costs at an inconvinient time.

So firstly it's a 98 Disco XS all standard except for BF A/T and Long trail tyres.

I'm wondering what engine/ performance modifications I could do reasonably cheaply to make it more reliable. I get the feeling that changing things like air filters is a bit of a pointless exercise from reading through past threads, so what things are worthwhile doing to make my disco more greenlane friendly?

Also kitwise, I've got bugger all in the way of recovery stuff, so a good idea of what I would need would be helpful. All I have is a tow rope, and a few shackles.
I'm not interested in the 'pimp-my-landy' fashion competition that alot of people seem to be doing. Roofracks, snorkels etc. would be a bit OTT for the stuff I intend to tackle, so things like, underbody protection, etc. I would be interested.

Hopefully you can give me an idea of what is worth getting, and what isn't.
Cheers.

A cb radio could help get help. A good rule the rougher the road the more damage to your car the more money you spend.
What is your idea of cheaply, may not be the same as mine.
Give a idea of what you want to spend , then you can get some good ideas from experience, we've been there we know what works and what doesn't.

Have fun and good luck

Cool, I looked at CB radios on eBay a while back and found that some are small enough to fit above the sun visor which is cool. They seem quite cheap (about 30 quid) aswel.

Umm, well all in, I'm looking to spend 3-400 quid max. It's not money burning a hole, and the less I spend the better. But that's what I've budgeted myself to allow me enough preperation to protect my vehicle.

hi m8...

diff guards are a good idea... craddocks doin a pair pretty cheap at the moment..

and some mates to tie to the other end of yr tow ropes is all ya need...

i take a few lumps of 7"x2"x14" lumps of wood.. just case the last guys through had 35" wheels and lift kits... they can help to give ya a bit of clearance...

Thanks for the info so far.

Diff guards, some chunks of wood, and maybe a CB radio.

What about the disco bumper trim? Is it worth doing the trim for greenlaning or does the standard bumper provide sufficient clearance.

With regard to self recovery, does anybody use ground anchors these days? I've also seen people using Hi Lift jacks as hand winches? I was thinking about a second hand tirfor, and a land anchor of some sort with the nessecary chains/ strops. What are people's thought's on this? Any idea of a good starter setup?

Cheers.

Tirfors aint cheap but they are worth it.Work consitantly will pull the moon closer. You'll also wear off the lunchtime pastys using it.

Having had to use a tirfor style hand winch, which was worth its weight in gold... I'm now looking to spend the extra and get a highlift to do both!! A much wider range of usage! Jates are a must also a decent tow rope and some shackles... You can buy 'starter' kits off fleabay but shop around...

I haven't found laning much different to paynplay regards vehicle spec, as far as I can see the more mods you fit the further you can go. I have seen some pretty extreme lanes to the extent that standard cars have had to be winched up.

Anyway, my advice is this:

Long days/weekends laning really give my wheel bearings and steering drop arm a battering.

Check your wheel bearings are properly tightened before hand and ASAP when you have done the day/weekend, also my steering drop arm came loose on the output shaft after my first laning weekend, but the car had done countless paynplay without trouble.

So those are the things I would check in particular.

And yes the thing with laning is that you are remote and potentially stranded.

You definitely need another vehicle, you need a good winch and some very long straps/rope, in case the nearest tree/rock is 100ft away.

It's very easy to become stranded in midwales with no phone signal and a storm coming in.

Cheers
