Well I bought it for £50! Paid the guy £5 for towing me home 6 miles with his 1996 Disco as my 1991 Ford Scorpio 2.0 Automatic wouldn't have made it.

It has no rust, just a whole lot of faded paint that I will need to get re-sprayed soon. It has original rims but sadly their in pretty bad condition so I will get other ones for it.

And you see the Disco with the roof rack to the left of the pic ? Thats his one he towed me with.

It is actually a '86 and not a '85 like he said. If it were a '85 it would have a 3.5 V8 carb, but it has a 3.5 V8 EFi so it must be inbetween the 1st of January and the 1st of October 1986. It has a 4 speed manual transmission and 87K on the clock.

The oil looks pretty new (about 1-2k old) so I will probably just keep that as its only been 2.5 years sitting. I threw (not litterally!) a battery into it but the starters shot, it just whines. Damn drive gear!

I'm going out now now to my local scrap yard to get some things for it. I'll also pick up a new alternator as it doesn't have a belt on it, so I suspect its not working! The fitting of these parts will have to wait till tomorrow though as the clouds are coming over :(

At least I'm the owner of a Range Rover now :)

It was bloody hard to get out but I managed it! I picket a reconditioned one up at the scrap yard and will fit it later. The rain held off so thats why I made a start on the future mud trekker!

Before I fit the new starter motor I thought I would get a new battery for it (the battery I used to test it was one that only held a 10 min charge so I can't use that for testing the actual engine!). I looked at this;Halfords Lead Acid Battery HB072 from Halfords Price £92.99 and thought "BLOODY EXPENCIVE"! AND It has a 1 Star rating! Why is this ? I would like to know cos I definitely don't want to spend any more than 90 quid on a battery!
 
I also need to replace the 4X4 shifter cable as it snapped and is stuck in High. The prev owner gave me one but how to I change it and where does it connect to ???

all range rovers are permanent 4 wheel drive,do you mean it is stuck in high range?
as for the battery, surely you must have a good motor factors near you, instead of bloody halfrauds.
 
Nope, the cheapest place is halfords. I find their items very good but expencive! And yes I mean High Range, sorry :lol:
 
I just bought a battery for my p38 dse from carcraft rochdale for £55 ,so it pays to shop around ,seems daft to buy a full range rover for £50 and pay twice as much for a battery.
 
Theres one in the paper (used, 1 year old) for £15. I don't know if its wise to buy a used battery though... ?

halfrauds are the dearest for batteries and most other things, i have just bought one for a L322 td V8 for £64, and the same place wanted £39.99 for a classic battery with 3 year warranty.so it does pay to look around, i know halfrauds are local and sometime handy, but why pay them almost twice as much.
 
That's a bargain....keep us updated like Wheeler Dealers and Ed China. RAVE or the old Haynes manual should help you out.
At least with the 3.5 you wont suffer block problems:clap2::clap2:

if its for a range rover then its a good deal. go for it. no reason for it to be no good unless the seller is a con man, but you are collecting from his premises, so i doubt he would sell you a wrongun, cos windows break when a battery gets chuc:Dked at them
 
@Irishrover - I sure will! :lol: Alternator tomorrow!

@1992lse - I'll go and get it later :). Might even get my torch out and try a nighttime fire up for the first time!
 
I also ordered a Haynes manual for the 1970-1985 Range Rover (I know, mines a 1986 but I guess the alternator and everything else like that is still the same logic) from the library.
