Hi! Guys,

Recently I did some first time off roading with my 110 and got boggod down in a small 2 feet stream bed. Went down the first embankment and when I tried to climb the other bank I got bogged down. I think the reason I got stuck was I did not got at it at an angle as my fellow offroader did but went straight at it. It was in 4x4 low but still some of the wheels did not turn. Shifted it into diffllock low and only the front left and rear right wheels were turning.

In the end we had to pull it out with another vehicle. Can some seasoned offroaders throw some light on offroading and how to use the difflock etc.

put difflock in before you get stuck! Put it in if you are crossing bad terrain, or where grip looks likley to be lost. I.e anywhere bar tarmac and flat dry dirt tracks. You will do no harm and it will help no end. It locks the front and rear propshaft together center difflock as one unit and will always give drive to each axle when locked. But how each axle diffs distribute the power is down to weight and grip on each wheel. Axle difflocks will lock axles so every wheel gets power weather or not it has any weight or grip. So with center difflock you can end up spinning one wheel on each axle and still go nowhere commonly called cross axled. Alot of the time this can be avoided by driving style but somtimes it is enevertable. Jai

ps I cannot spell for toffee! And no Land Rovers did not come with axle difflocks as standard. Alot of Jap stuff does but LR now use electronics mixed together with abs and traction control to get out of these situations. Various types of difflocks can be added to your LR front and rear fitted would be around £1200-£2000 depending on what you want. Jai

what was the other car you followed?Did you follow his line?

THats exactly what i was supposed to do but I did not do it. But why did not all the wheels turn when it was in 4x4 low? Only some of them turned. Also tried to turn right or left but the front wheels would not move in either direction. I also tried to reverse but just got bogged down more.

the drive will follow the path of least resistance therefore the wheels that had no grip would take all the drive leaving the wheels with grip stationary.. hence the axle difflock or a LSD on the axle would prevent this from happening.. traction control would also have prevented it by braking the spinning wheels so making the wheels with traction the path of least resitance for the drive..

in the absence of these drivers aids though you just have to be careful to follow the line of the guy in front until you get good enough to work out your own line so you don't get cross axled... it's all part of the fun

Learning the limits of your motor is very important. Watch any vids on youtube of motors doing difficult stuff they usually take a few attempts.

thanks for all the help guys. Hope that now LR is in INDIA, they will also bring in the LR experience and off roading workshop. Damn they are not getting the defenders in to india.
