I’m new to land Rover ownership but the engine in my 90 is in need of serious attention thought better to replace the entire engine with a 200 tdi as everyone seems to go that direction. I've found a 200 tdi engine with 108000 miles on the clock no smoke and apparently no oil usage... is this reasonable mileage and should I expect a lot more life out of the engine? many thanks. Pd

With a little bit of care any TDI motor will run 250000 miles without a major rebuild.I sold my wifes 200tdi RR about 18 months ago with 214000m on it,saw it pass its mot couple of weeks back with 223000m - the injectors have never been serviced, all it had was a head gasket at 72000.
I still think they are,(200 and 300 tdi) the best all round 4wd engine ever made.

Many thanks - this is exactly the reassurance I was after, now I’ve got to settle on a price and arrange fitting it!.... Anyone know of a great link on transplanting a 200tdi into a 90? Cheers. pd

Hi - thanks for the advice guys - really helps.

It turns out the 200tdi engine is from a discovery which means I need expensive fabricated turbo and exhaust manifolds, extended power steering pipes and oil cooler lines. I wasn't planning to do the work myself and didn't want high labor charges from my mechanic due to the modifications he'd have to overcome... I need the car back ASAP and the same seller of the disco engine has offered me a slightly Smokey on starting 200 tdi engine out of a defender... Would this be a straight swap into the 90 or should I give up? Got to make a decision by morning so any advice would be greatly received. Cheers CLANK

i put a disco 200 in my 90, yes is is a bit of a fiddle, but i built the whole thing so i worked around it.
I pretty sure the defender 200 will fit straight in as the layout is pretty much exactly the same as the old 2.5 diesel, or petrol for that matter.
