l tested the glow plugs on my 135,000 mile TD5 Defender.

All four were defective.
Two were open circuit, one was dead short, and one read about 35K Ohms

So l took out the relay.
l've bought four new glow plugs and will obviously fit them, but the Land Rover seems to start instantly without them, even in freezing weather.

What are the glow plugs for on the TD5 is it extreme cold starting or more for emissions reduction?

cold starting the engine control module measures intake air temp and then activates glow plug relay if it's required

Update, replaced the glow plugs, no issues, a bit fiddly but they all came out okay,
Four new ones fitted and the puff of smoke l was getting on cold startup is gone.

I managed to do the job without removing the inlet manifold. So long as you have a long 1/4" socket extension and universal joint it's okay. And obviously the special socket for the glow plugs

The engine started instantly afterwards and ran fine but there was no power, it felt like the turbo wasn't working. I checked and had forgotten to re connect the MAP sensor on the manifold. That would do it then

Re connected and all was fine.

What special socket do you need for the glow plugs?
