If you don't mind bits of cheap crap falling into your cylinders or them shearing when trying to get them out (after they fail prematurely). Buy cheap, buy twice (and suffer the consequences)

I also have a cheap set from ebay approx 12 quid been in well over a year np problems.
Usual scare stories, when was the last time anyone heard of a glow plug breaking up in service?
Obviously by the law of averages it must happen, but do you know of anyone its happened to?

Edit just checked plugs fitted 14/12/12

It happened to me! My head was changed by the dealer and came back with cheap crappy plugs in it. One of them disintegrated. I replaced the plugs and within a couple of hundred miles the engine started to run on it's own oil. I believe the two problems are linked as it ran very well up until the heater plug issue. I kept the remains of the plug as a memento :)

So when you use the word believe the two issues are related, you actually mean you are not 100 percent?

Ps forgot to mention I also have the same plugs in my other tdi land rover, again no issues, there are a few oil leaks and I am busy formulating a cunning plan to somehow blame the glow plugs for them!

I've not taken it apart yet. I hypothesized that foreign objects embedded in the cylinder crown would not be good for the engine!

It doesn't really matter if the two are related or not, what is important is that one disintegrated. While I may use cheaper components here and there if it is anything that could cause a disproportionate amount of damage / repair costs if it failed then I go for quality first.

Thats a good word, Ive just got to think of it next time I have a conversation with someone:D
Ref the broken plug, that may be the mechs fault?
On the other end of the scale I bought 6 glowplugs for the wifes car 124 quid, I nearly fainted!

Don't buy cheap glow plugs, my father inlaw had some cheapo plugs fitted to his Ford Ranger and a tip burnt through and dropped in to the cylinder chamber and chewed a piston up, all for the sake of cheap glow plugs, 100 or so quid is cheaper than a new engine.
