That's right mate. A gif is just the most comman format to be able to animate avatars. .gif is just the file extention like jpeg is. It would mean that you could have a moving avatar.

Another problem is that you can only have a 39kb dp which is far too small for a gif. Can it be upped to something like 4mb for a dp if we are allowed gifs?
I don't want gifs in posts, only in dps.
Any thoughts?

allowing animated gifs sounds like it could be good... i probably wouldn't use that feature myself (can never be bothered to put one together!), but i would question the 4Mb limit...
i have a super fast internet link, but others don't. When viewing a thread with 10 posts from different people, if everyone had a 4Mb avatar, you'd have to download 40Mb of avatars alone! That could render the forum useless to people on slow internet links (at least until the avatars are in their cache). It *could* even put off new people!
Also, I don't know how resizeable animated GIFs are in an automated system... maybe they work fine, but animated gifs are rather more complex than a regular gif. Anyway, if resizing isn't an issue, perhaps 100 or 200K should be the upper limit... you have to think worst case - even 10 times 200K would be a 2Mb download when viewing the wrong thread!
Anyway... i'm certainly not against the idea, just saying there are some technical limitations and usability limitations that may cause the feature to remain non-existant despite everyone wanting it... sorry to put a *slight* downer on it!

I think if limits where set on it, then it would work. If you're picture doesn't fit the limits, you can't upload it.
There could be something to turn off animations in you CP or maybe there is a way to make the animation the last thing that downloads so you get the posts as they are now instantly, and then the animations come after. If you've got a fast connection they'll come instantly, if not they'll pop up a few seconds later. The reason I brought this up was because I went on a different forum (non land rover) and they all had animated avatars. I copied a few and they were over 4mb but I never noticed a delay. There must be ways of optimising it but that's for someone cleverer with coding than me to butt in with and help us out.

animated avitars are just a pain in the arse. Esp for those of us browsing from phones.
