I have a laser tachometer, how should I go about measuring the revs at idle on a 300tdi? Assuming it does not have the correct alternator pulley. I can think of painting a white stripe on the belt or one of the bigger pulleys.

Any ideas?

i am guessing but I suspect the fan pulley is the same size as the crank pulley and a white stripe on a fan blade might work well

I'm thinking the most no-nonsense approach is directly on the crank pulley, but it's difficult to crawl under and get a reading. I guess that's what I'll do, no point in messing about with ratios and whatnot.
