Having a senior moment
Hi Guys

A some of you will know I am just swapping the transfer box - it occurs to me that while I am at it I should really remove the gearbox and check out the clutch and the somewhat suspect rear enging oil seal.

The thing is... from looking at it it doesn't look too difficult to do from underneath; however a few people have said that it should only be attempted as an engine out (or at least tipped forward) arrangement.

Interested in opinions... engine out or just rip out the gearbox while I am under there doing the xfer box?

The gearbox is gonna be bloody heavy, and I hope you have got some big trolley jacks as your gonna need em, and help from a mate...

The gearbox will come out without taking the engine out, but you will have to support the engine whilst the mounts are undone...

Cheers Mike, Got the gearbox out successfullywith just me and my 11 year old son. We erected a padded area on top of a spare wheel where the gearbox was likely to end up and gave a major tug... with a little steadying it worked a treat.

I am still tempted to buy an engine hoist and jury rig it to support the weight to replace it though.

Was glad I took it out too! thrust bearing is about to collapse and the pressure plate has seen many better days! even removed the flywheel to find a leaking rear crank seal... I suspected this was the case but have been avoiding the job for about a year... ah well that'll get done in the morning and we can start on rebuilding the whole thing. Cleaning and replaining bits as we go for a bit of a laugh as well!

Cheers
