hi guys we have a 2002 freelander td4 auto . Driving home tonight when it was changing up and down the gears it was jumping and banging .HELP any ideas .

check the gearbox oil level as well .

Does it do it when selecting drive or reverse when stationary?

it could be the solenoids going in the box that select the gears,it happened to mine the bx doesnt engage and revs high then suddenly dumps it into gear. Dont drive it to far or hard and get it into a garage fairly quick as you can cause quite a bit of damage if not careful
