So I just bought a defender 90 300tdi the other night! Herd a whine sound coming from down round the gearbox area but thought it could be the front diff! So I checked it, level was fine. Took a closer look under the gearbox and found this!

Am I right in thinking there should be a plug in there? Does this mean my gearbox has zero oil in it!? Hope to god theres no serious damage done, who knows how long its been like this!

Anyway, whats the best oil to put in? as Ive been reading up on it and theres discussion whether to use automatic gear oil or not?

Did you only check the oil level in the front diff or did you check the gearbox and transfer box aswell?

Well that sorts that out! Now where the hecks the whine coming from if it aint the gearbox! Just checked the front diff but I will check all levels! Need to get myself an owners manual an that should see me right! dont know much about land rovers! :confused2:

I bought the same car the week before you and posted the same question last week.....

On that basis maybe I should post this weeks lottery numbers, you stick them on next week and we'll share the winnings :D

On a serious note... Ashcroft have a complete manual for the R380 gearbox on their site. If your reverse is under 5th you have an R380.

Found it for you: http://www.roversclub.org/docs/R380_Gearbox_Overhaul_Manual.pdf

Just because it has oil doesn't mean it isn't whining, it depends how badly it is whining because I have known some LT230's (the transfer box) to whine a bit. In fact both boxes can whine obviously, but the TB tends to whine more.

If you are new to LR's then it may not be as bad as you think.
