Hi all newbie here,

Brought our first Range rover p38 few months ago, had a problem with the gearbox whilst going up a rather steep hill (Porlock hill, north Devon) and it wouldn't go into first gear. Anyway that's another story for another day here's the situation now:

-When in neutral it makes a horrendous whirling, clattering noise (bit like metal in a tumble dryer I imagine)
-Can put it into all gear positions
-Noise disappears when clutch is pressed
-Noise stays when in 1st and gearstick jumps out of position when lift clutch
-Car will pull away in 2nd, 3rd, reverse, and sounds fine in 4th and 5th

any advice would be greatfully received, do you think I need a full gearbox replacement or can it be fixed. Wanted peoples advice on here so I can arm myself with info so I don't get ripped off by the garage!

Thank you in anticipation
Natalie

Sorry forgot car details, P38, 1995, 4.0 v8 petrol, manual

Bearing on their way out? hence it goes quiet in 4th and 5th. Direct drive through input /output shafts. sounds like a rebuild/recon. Have you checked the oil level?Lubrication is by an oil pump but it sounds like the damage is already done. Got a gearbox in the garage which had the same symptoms. I stripped it down and the output shaft was flopping about like a cock in a three cornered hat (mechanical term). Cheers
