i have a 3.9 series 1 disco, the gearshift stays on the left hand side and will not centre, i know its a simple broken spring. is it a job that can be done with the box in the car?

Bias plate - change in situ

Yep. Bias plate. Mine the same. Remove centre console, gear shift and drill out pop rivets on the seal and its held on by 4 bolts.
