Hi All,
I have a 97 P38 4.0 Auto and I've recently been getting an intermittant fault message on my display. Say's " Gear box fault ".
Description as to what happens is as follows...

Normally lose P , R or D on the display when selected gears are used. Lose the Sport button, and when I pull away in first gear it's like trying to pull away in second gear in a manual car.. no power. If I'm stationary and put it into drive, gears do not automatically engage causing the constant rolling you get with any auto. Also I get an ABS fault and RH window not set. While I'm driving and hit the brake, rev counter and speedo act funny.
I've tried using google to find out what it could be the cause, and a few bit's have pointed to connectors under the expansion tank, or replace the battery. This i've looked into and even replaced the battery.
All to no avail.. and it's and intermitant fault so sometimes it has worked fine.
Additional to this now I have also lost Left hand indicators, and complete failure of dash display and speedo and rev counter, again it's not a constant fault..

Any one got similar faults.?

I think you should try and get the Range Rover on Test Book or autologic ect diagnostic equipment and see what fault codes there are. Most independant Land Rover garages will be able to do this.
May be problem with your BECM ecu but I am not sure, you have already done the frist think I would of advised you and changed the battery.

your problem could well be fuse box failure , not unheard of on a rangerover , a decent sparky should be able to diagnose this for you if your unsure .

When the vehicle voltage gets really low. The Range will start to develop ghost faults which in tern become real faults. You say you have replaced the battery but is your alternator charging?

I had a similar problem with mine not so long ago, so I changed the battery which cleared the fault for a few days then ended up putting a alternator on it, You could also check to see if the alternator terminals are tight and clea

had same prob with mine installed new battery, only to find it was alternator fitted new alternator no probs since

Most likely cause is low alternator output. Rev counter is driven from that. Try sticking a new control box and brushes in it.
But first of all check fuse box.
