After changing the oil and filter in my auto box to see if it would cure the problem ( put it in gear then won't move for about a minute ) no real change. So I've been told it needs gearbox and torque converter rebuild.
now im going to try to save a few quid by removing the gearbox myself .is it difficult to remove and refit?
bloody fed up::(

dificut depends on your diy level :) but tis heavy . whats the idea ? get it rebuilt or second hand one? know some on here do gearbox rebuilds :)

After a change you need to manually move it through the gears and wait for them to engage. after all gears have been gone through then you top off the fluid again and a bit over the full mark does no harm. And make sure you have the brakes on while doing this

I am in the middle of pulling mine,got the D2 on axle stands and going to use engine crane and trolley jacks for lowering-doing slowly as time allows

what was your problem ?

Hi i have been quoted £450 + vat for rebuilding my box and£189 +vat for the torque converter but that doesn't include removal or refitting.
if any one has any advice please feel free.
thankyou

When I changed oil it was a bit black but not like a regular oil colour. I changed the filter at the same time. It's better than it was before the oil change but still not right.

id remove bell housing and pump housing and look at first 2 clutch packs ,t/c should be ok unless it had other symptoms

Also bear in mind that you only changed about half of the total amount of oil in the box and converter,if a change improved it then do it again before condemning the box.

Hi I'm going to do another oil change and see if there is any further improvement. Fingers crossed.
Thanks for the advice.

Hi Basildon, do you know the correct procedure for re-filling the auto box?

1. Engine off, oil in via level/hole until it starts to run back out;

2. Now start the engine, cycle through each gearbox position - pausing to allow drive take-up - LEAVE THE ENGINE RUNNING; now get back under and keep filling until it starts to come back out again and you're done!

Is this the way you did yours?

No I was on my own so I filled it then went through gears then stopped it and filled up again . I'm going to do another change using the correct procedure then see what happens.

Hi Basildon, if you were doing this again from the beginning, you would have emptied out approx 4.5ltrs and after following the refill procedure you will have put in approx 4.5ltrs of new oil.

Can you remember how much new oil you were able to get in?

It needs to be running for that final top up .

sounds most like it has not got enough oil in it ,You have to fill it up while running. Best with front wheels a couple of inches of ground and an assistant in the car foot on brake 30 seconds in each gear selector position whilst keep topping up oil till no more will go in!

Hi I'm not too sure how much oil I changed .i used one of those hand pumps to fill the gearbox I think it holds 1 litre and I filled it four times but at the end there was a bit of oil left in it. So I guess 3 3/4 litres.:boom:

so you did not change the filter then. Drop the pan clean it , get new pan gasket and filter. what you did was a futile attempt. Should be about 5 quarts when you drop the pan and let things drain
