Hi I hope someone may have some ideas for me.

The gear selector part no Ucb000051 is supposedly faulty on my Range Rover 2004 petrol.

You cannot buy this gear selector new anymore and so need to fit a second hand one does anyone know if these are coded to the original vehicle and need to be re coded …… we have fitted a second hand one and this has not solved the problem.

The original problem was when selecting a gear drive or reverse the selected gear would clunk in putting the car into limp mode.

Any information gratefully received.

Hi the code came up as the gear selector the Landrover guy who fitted the second hand one normally fits new but Landrover no longer make the part

This doesn’t sound right. Are you sure that something else (e.g. the inhibitor switch) isn’t putting the transmission into failsafe when the gear lever is moved? Once in failsafe the mains pressure is not modulated which causes the gear engagement from Park or Neutral to go in with a bang. As kermit_rr has suggested, I would get the codes read and see if P0705 has been flagged.

if you mean the gear leaver no its not coded, nore is the selector in the gear box or the valve block

Hi Phil many thanks I now have the code and it is P0705 Transmission Range sensor circuit malfunction is this the inhibitor switch you are saying will be faulty many thanks Justin

Hi Justin,

Yes, P0705 indicates a problem with the inhibitor switch. This switch is also known by many other names, including:
  • xyz switch
  • gear position switch
  • neutral safety switch
  • selector switch
The switch is hidden behind a tin cover behind the selector lever on the RH side of the transmission.

Even used switches are stupidly expensive. It’s held together by 7 rivets, so you could drill off the rivet heads and clean up the internals to maybe get it working properly again. You would need to find a satisfactory method to fix it back together which would keep it water-tight.

The same switch/connector is also used on the BMW X5 (E53) 4.4i and 4.6is from the same era, except the BMW switch has a shorter length of cable between the switch and the connector. The BMW version is often a lot cheaper than the L322 one, so if you’re handy with a soldering iron…
