Hi all,

Have just got a 1990 200TDi and the gear selection is frankly rubbish. It is also very, very easy to accidentally engage reverse instead of first.

I know (because I've been told) that the linkage is adjustable (at least to some extent); however the Haynes Book of Lies refers me to a Land Rover dealer and I don't yet have a CD copy of a workshop manual.

I'd just like some pointers to improving the gear selection for now as my wife is really struggling with it as it stands and I'll do it properly (as per LR manuals) in due course.

I'm not sure if this is related but the reverse lights don't work either...

The two symptoms are related and can be cured by adjustment ususally, you will need a copy of the manual as it is a complex mechanism.
Should be about £12-£15 for a genuine LR CD .
 
Sorted this - cost about £40 for all the springs and so on from Land Rover (including a reversing light switch which makes up about 70% of that cost).

Still got to make the reverse lights work but that's only a bulb or wiring issue now - and maybe a couple of shims on the reverse plunger which are missing from our car completely.

The old reverse switch was completely missing a spade connector so I was disappointed when the new one didn't instantly cure the problem...

Pretty shocked to find when I took everything apart that the cam at the end of the hi-lo ratio/diff lock lever was only 'just' wedged onto the very edge of the spindle...and at a drunken angle at that!!

No wonder I could only swap from high to low ratios with an inordinate amount of force..!

Wouldn't say gearchanges and fiddling with the hi-lo/diff lock is "knife through butter" quality now, but it's a massive improvement that is much better than I expected and better than any of the other Mk1 Disco's I've tried recently.
