Hi,

I have a 1990 s15 4x4, with 3.08 gears in the rear. How can I tell
what the gears are in the transfer case? Is there a marking on the
case or in the glove box? Is there a site that can tell me what codes
equal what gear ratio's in the front end?

TIA

Mike

There should be a label or stamp on the diff cover bolts or axle tube.

You can just jack up one wheel and count the turns of the driveshaft
while you rotate the tire twice. This will give you the ratio. I find
a chalk mark on each helps with counting.

I think you need to know the t-case make and year and then you might be
able to go to the maker's site and get the ratios.

You also should be able to order the build sheet from GM for the truck.
That would give you everything. You could try at GM online or call
their 1-800 number. It doesn't hurt to also call the number and
register as the new owner. They will then send you any recall notices
etc...

If it is a 4x4, the axle ratio is the same front a rear and a 3.08 is
TALL for a 4x4. There is not different ratio Tcases from the factory,
same case is used in all same models of same type and rating. The
transfercases are 1 t 1 in high and usually around 2.6 to 2.7 to 1 in
low range depending on the model of the Tcase (ie NP231, NP 208, NP241
etc)
