hi everyone.
My discovery 2 td5 manual is having problems changing gear.
It went from been good to bad in no time at all. All gears are really hard to get into except for 5th.
I've changed the oil with mtf94 but it has made no difference. I've checked clutch fluid and its full to top. My clutch has always had to go right to the floor to change gear. Been like this for the 2 years I've owned it. Is there anyone with any idea what it could be. Due to do a 600 mile round trip in a couple of days and not sure it will survive this way. All gears are really stiff and notchy but 4th and 1st completely block sometimes although it goes in to 4th a bit easier if I dip clutch and shoot the revs up a bit as I change gear. Any advice much appreciated.

Best posted in the Discovery section where Disco-folks will see this.
Doesn't sound good at all.
Folks will help.

I've not got a Discovery, so am not posting from experience. But I've found the R380 gearbox (which I believe you'll have) is very reluctant to change gear if there is any torque at all getting through from the engine. This is good as it makes it harder to grind the gears. If your bite point is very near the floor the clutch plates may not be separating quite far enough to let it change gear freely. If you can find all the gears with the engine off but it won't let you do so with the engine running this may be the problem. On my Defender there's a plate on the top of the pedal box in the engine compartment you can take off and this lets you see the adjuster nuts on the clutch master cylinder rod. There's not much room to wiggle the spanners but with a little patience you can ease them round to raise the bite point. This may help.

Thanks for the help. Much appreciated. I'll try and look into this today.

check the clutch travel , take the mats out to give you a bit more , just to see . My R380 was awful ,ive just changed the oil again same spec MTF94 , But i had heard smith + allan made shifting better , And i tell you its true , mine feels like its a new box .

I feel like my clutch works better with mats out. Why is this? Just looked up the smith + Allan mtf94. 23 quid for 5 litres delivered....bargain. its booked in the garage on Tuesday but I will try the oil you have recommended. Thank you.

Mats out just gives a bit more travel . like mine it had sound proofing , standard mating and then a rubber mat on top , so its a bit of height to stop the pedal . And the S+A is much cheaper than what i was using . A lot though swear by redline , Hopefully you will get a good result with the sa as i have . let me know

There is an issue with stiffer gear change when the box gets warmer on longer journeys. Mine done/does it and one suggestion was to apply some form of lubricant to the bottom of the gearstick and let it run down. From memory there is a nylon collar in there that can cause issues. It worked with mine is all I can say.
