Hi all and a happy new year.

My TDV8 3.6 2007 is playing up when changing gear. It looks like I am now destined to replace a gear box. What my question, to all the knowledge on Landyzone is where do I start looking for a replacement/reconditioned one.

All advice gratefully accepted.

Has the box had a filter and oil change, also is the ecu running the latest software ? Adding a tube of Dr Tranny shudder fix can help juddering and shift quality.

In relation to filter and oil change it happened last week. What happens is when I go for kick down it grinds into a gear with a thump then registers a fault " limited gear range ". Also sometimes when moving off after second gear change she starts shuddering lift of the revs and reapply and all is well. I'm worried that it will cause a total failure if not sorted soon.

I've contacted main Land Rover dealer and asked about software upgrade and they were unaware of what I was talking about. I will pursue this again tomorrow.

Now to Dr Trannys magic mix where can I purchase this.

Regards and thanks for your time in answering my question.

not sure on the later gearboxes mate, just know that the ones fitted to the early L322's were also pretty rubbish.

regular oil changes help alot.

lets just hope yours isnt too badly damaged. as with the early type gearboxes they often require a complete rebuild if you don't catch the fault early enough.

i would stop using your car until you get it checked out.

get it on diagnostics first to see if any faults with the gearbox have come up.

good luck

Hi

It seems to be 3rd and 4th and possibly higher gears as well because when it goes to fault mode ie Limited gears available It feels as if its grabbed 5 or 6.

Other than the ‘standard’ 2-1 rollout shift (clunk) issue and the seizing selector lever cable clamp (drops into neutral) problem there appear to be incredibly few issues reported with the 6HP26 which, considering it’s been around for twelve years now and there are millions of Gen. 1 units on the road, is quite remarkable. The only other issue I’ve noticed coming to light, particularly over the past year or so, are solenoid issues with the Mechatronic unit. I suspect this may be your problem.

Unlike with the 5-speed boxes, ZF have not made individual parts available for the Mechatronic unit, preferring to sell it as a complete unit (and, because the transmission ECU is integrated into the ECM which bolts to the valve block, this allows the units to be pre-calibrated at the factory). However, recently ZF have started making solenoid kits available.

In order of cost :

1. If you take it to a dealer, they will replace the whole transmission.

2. If you take it to a transmission repair shop, they will replace the complete Mechatronic unit.

3. If you want to isolate the fault and identify the particular solenoid(s) that’s causing the issue, you will have to do it yourself I’m afraid. I personally would start by swapping EDS 2 & 4 to see if the problem moves with it.

Knowledgable stuff here. Bemble, you're a good chap to know.

Now, on this gearbox.

Have you noticed the sat nav screen flickering soon after starting & moving off?
Is the Electronic handbrake working correctly?

No the Sat Nav working perfectly no sign of any flickering and the hand brake works perfectly well.

I have a 2003 l322 4.4 petrol with 81000 miles. In the last two days when I have kicked down to third she suddenly went to second and then had a screeching noise before shifting back up.Happened a couple of times then
yesterday went to trans fail safe warning but not all the time.
Have been through all the threads on transmission.
The garage that looks after the car is 12 miles away. Where do I start?
There is a garage 100 yards away, but not a rangey specialist. Do I get
the oil trans oil level checked first or try and drive the 12 miles?

drive the 12 miles if it makes it & pref past the bank cause you will need to pop in there first to make a cash withdrawal, overdraft, loan etc;)

Thanks wil 2813 . Should also mention that I have had trouble with the occasional flat battery which was replaced two months ago. Bought a solar charger (4W) from Maplins and have used it for last three days. Also had to put
in 2 litres of water in rad as coolant level warning came up. Have just driven
1/4 mile and no warning messages up. Should I start with a trans oil change
or does it sound as though I have a terminally ill gearbox?

could be battery/charging issues throwing up trans fail, imo/experience with a l322 gearbox issue I would stop driving it get it delivered on a truck to someone who knows what they are doing
