Could be a bad ground cable(s) from the battery to the frame and/or
engine. So the high current from the starter looks for other ways to
find itself a way back to "ground". One way is backwards thru other
parts of the electrical system. When the timing was off on my old LX
it put such a load on the starter motor that it melted one of the
small ground wires because the main ground wire wasn't enough to carry
all the current draw.
