Hi there; I've gone and bought a Freelander 3DR TD4, Auto, year 2000, 80,000 miles. Interior is clean though the outside especially the plastics have had some scrapes/abuse. The auto gearbox, which I need due health/bad back, is a trade £750 plus reconditioned unit with another 6 months warranty. Thanks guys I heeded your advice on an earlier thread and didn't go and buy a V6 petrol.

Tax, tested and insured with a newish set of Goodrich Mud terrain and alloys I'm ready to go for less than £2,500. **** colour, champagne silver, but heck I can paint it as its for abuse, a rubble truck and lamping, so when it breaks it will be scrapped. Hopefully, a good few miles down the road. Few bits still to fix: some internal plastic pieces (already found £20); tow bar (found, £75 fitted). Still to find: rain guard as I want it open top for most of the time; roof rail, roof bars and expedition rack; light guards and any bumpers and wheel arches that are in better nick than mine. Scrapyard challenge as these items just cannot blow my budget. I missed a scapper with leather without an engine that went for £400 on evilbay the other day, so I know it can be done. (Anyone have any of the above then give us a shout).

This is a second car to save abusing my Volvo XC70 which is newish (after having had two P38's go bust on me).

So the fun begins. How long it lasts, how many miles and what running costs will be interesting. Should have bought a Disco? No, what I've paid for this Freelander wouldn't pay for a major disco engine/gearbox/transmission catastrophe and that I do 12,000 miles road use and the Volvo does 32mpg and a 85mph plus all day long if I wanted to. Lets see how the Freelander goes then; will it be cheque book tears again?
