Did a 100 mile journey yesterday in my 1996 300tdi 90 and suffered from momentary power loss every 20 miles or so. Accelerating then sudden loss of power ,lift foot off and back on then it’d be ok again until I was 5 mins from home and it died completely and now won’t start. It turns over on the starter but won’t fire up, I have a fuel filter, injector seals and a fuel shut off solenoid on order any help would be appreciated

Dodgy wire on fuel cut off.
Bypass with a new wire for testing purposes, you will need to manually take it off to stop the engine.
This is what we did on my son's 200tdi when it wouldn't start, I presume you can do the same on a 300tdi.

+1 on the stop solenoid.
Run a 12V supply to the solenoid and start the car.
As @Anaconda said you will need to remove the 12V to stop the engine.

Change filter first, if no joy fit new fuel lift pump.

You can test the lift pump by sitting a jerry can on the wing and using a piece of pipe to gravity feed straight into the filter or injector pump. however even with a failed lift pump the engine should run it will just splutter at high rpm or wont get to high rpm.

Filter, in general, will give you poor performance rather than non running. Although they can get to the point you can't actually drive it, we have found on my son's 200tdi it's best change the filter every 6 months.
