I have a D2 V8, it has been bobtailed and a custom fuel tank fitted.
I have a ebay copy of a bosch 044 fuel pump that on paper if suitable for the engine.

in its 1st outing we had some fuel starvation issues never a full stall but loss of power like the pump was not keeping up.

I still have the pump assembly from the original tank could I run that in line from the new tank to the engine, it would not be in the tank, are there issues with this?

I think there are. the original pump will work only submerged and how do you install the fuel pressure regulator on the return line to that in line pump?

Some of these pumps are too high pressured.
Use a swirl pot & this allows a return with a fuel pressure regulator to be fitted.
 
Fuel pressure regulators are available for external mounting, some the pressure are pre-set and others are adjustable for the EFI engines, also available are high pressure/ flow fuel pumps and of course a suitable external fuel filter.

And with fuel tank with sufficient inlets-outlets I don’t see an issue with allowing fuel returning to the tank.
 
What’s your fuel pressure at the fuel rail’s schrader valve port at the rear LH of the V8 engine? It should be about 50psi, not sure on bar pressure conversion.

Well we have solved this
when we cut off the back the original fuel tank and pump had to go,
So we got the tank seen in the pics above shown with its pump.

took it to an event and it ran but would periodically struggle which we thought was the pump not keeping up, upon further thought and info from this forum it was the opposite of too much fuel from the pump which would then stall the pump and lead to an almost stall of the engine.

so we fitted a pressure regulator.

unfortunately the damage was done already and the plugs were covered in crud from running rich.
so now with the regulator tuned to 50 psi and the plugs cleaned she runs sweet again.
