Hi all
Would like some help again and a bit of training on the multimeter

Problem -fuel gauge not working

Defender 300tdi with no fuel warning light

Bought new sender still no good

The wires 3 these include 1xred 1xblack and 1xgreen and black

I put multi on red and black no readings

Next red and green/black

Got 5.7v

Do I have a new faulty sender (it was a Brit part)

Now using the multimeter how do I check the new sender is ok and the fuel gauge is a good one

Thanks

Does water temp gauge work ok?
Ignition on, short Green/Black connector to a good chassis earth - does gauge go to full?

Hi thanks for reply

Yes the water temp works and I have checked fuse

The gauge is stuck on empty

I will ground the wire tomorrow to see if gauge moves

If it does move what's the problem

Regards

If it moves then the gauge should be fine and the fault will either be:

1. Wires connected to wrong terminals on sender.
2. The sender.
3. The earth wire to the sender (black).

If it doesn't then it could be the 12v supply to the gauge but unlikely as it is shared with water temp gauge. Could also be the gauge itself or a broken Green/Black wire from gauge to sender

Thanks for the explanation

I want to do all the jobs on my defender from now on rather than book it in to garage. I am a novice but want to learn and get satisfaction from fixing something and it's not about saving money as I have no tools and buying them as I go.

Got a Haynes manual but you have helped so much more with what is happening

Any tips on tools needed and do I need 2 tonne or 3 tonne axle stands

Thanks

I'm a novice still too, but I'll try to never take the ol' girl to the garage! Some tools may seem expensive for seldom use, but with labour rates averaging £50 an hour you only have to use a £50 tool for 1hr for it to have paid for itself!
2t axle stands are fine, if you use the pair then you've got 4t capacity and well over what any Landy weighs!

White/Slate wire goes to the low fuel indicator in the dash.
Green/Black to the fuel gauge
Black to earth.

Try changing over the W/S and the G/B if they are single connections.

If they go through a socket to the tank, try sticking a bit of wire in each hole to make sure that the internal connections haven't failed.

Hi

Tried the green wire to earth. Yes the gauge went to full

I then cut open wires and checked for snags none but checking earth wire to gearbox it just came away stripped wire cleaned up earth bolt on gearbox fastened up and hey presto fuel gauge works

I will have to see what the returns policY is at parts supplier

Thanks for the help on the next problem

How easy are changing discs front and back should I give it a go just worried about getting rusty nuts and bolts apart as will be doing it on drive.

Going to try in spring when weather warms up

Thanks

Changing the discs is fairly straight forward.

Strip the calipers off and support them with a cable tie.

The rest is straigt forward.

Remove the disc from the hub, which is easy enough with a long socket breaker bar.

It may be easier if you drop the hub studs into the wheel as that gives a bit of resistance when undoing the bolts.

Reassemble ... Job done ;) ;)
